Can't find a 84 sending unit, so tank swap question.

Sending units for an 84 Ranger 2.8 seem to be impossible to find, and if you can it's way overpriced.
I checked RockAuto and noticed that I can get a whole new tank for about $50.
So the question is, what tank will fit the 84 Ranger with a minimum of hassle, and also fit a more common year (cheaper) fuel sending unit?
I'm guessing I could get a new tank and a cheap common sending unit for about the cost of an official 84 sending unit.

Summit racing has what you need for about 70.00 +ship. Seems pretty good considering you want to put a new tank in from another year/model and then hook up some other sending unit. I would think any tank that you may want to smash in there thats 1990 or newer will have a sending unit with a pump so the cost would be a lot more that just replacing the sending unit.

Assuming by sending unit----you are referring to the rheostat & float.....
what i did was......removed the assembly from the tank......
removed the bad sending unit (rheostat & float) with a dremel tool from the bracket it was attached to.....
spot-welded a GOOD sending unit onto the bracket....
reconnected the wires to the sending unit....plugged in harness......
moved "new" float up & down by hand to confirm fuel gauge showed correct amount....
re-installed assembly in the tank.

total cost $20/2 hours work

When I had this problem I just went to my local JY and got a tank out of a 87. It has the in tank pump, which is also low pressure. I also took the connector that hooks to the sending unit. I rewired the connector to the factory wires, hooked up the fuel pump (I was already running a frame mounted pump) and everything has worked since.

Bryan, thats an 85 unit, don't think the rings match up for the 84.
Let me know if I'm wrong cuz I can find an 85 for cheaper than that.

84 and 85 are different. Hole size changed.

Thanks for the info.
So will an 85-87 tank bolt right in without any mods? Seems like the eaiser fix is to just swap tanks.
Welding isn't one of my skills yet unfortunately.

With a little forcing the 87 tank fit in mine. The straps are a little tight, but still hold it up in the stock location and the factory skid for the tank bolted back into place.

Yep Sorry about that. Didn't notice that I put in a 85, sorry..
