I'm new to TRS so forgive me if this has been asked before: I have an '87 Ranger 4X4 XLT w/2.9 & 5 sp. (Just picked it up a few weeks ago) Here goes: cold it runs fine but when it warms up it 'loads up' at about 1/2 - 3/4 throttle - especially if I'm just trying to maintain speed. When I got it the previous owner had replaced the TPS, MAP, tuned it up & still issues. I replaced the coolant temp sensor, o2 sensor, checked the cat (it had been gutted already), checked timing (it was off 5 deg and dist. was a little loose). I cleaned the EGR system - it was completely plugged. The engine has good compression and vacuum, the fuel pump maintains good pressure. We ohmed the injectors and all were good (one was .002 higer than the others) but, as a last ditch effort we swapped all of them with known good ones.

All of this to no avail - I am out of ideas. Oh yeah, as if this weren't enough, it is getting about 10 MPG and won't go over 78 MPH :dunno:

ANy help would be appreciated!

Did you check the TFI module on the distributor. there are two screws that hold it on you need a thin wall socket to remove it you can get at the part store. Take it in and have it tested and have them do the test at least three times for it to get hot. Look in the tech library under TFI troubleshooting if you want to test it yourself. It is recommended getting a good one and always ues plenty of heat sink grease when installing it or you can remote mount it away from heat but you still need a heat sink to absorb the heat they produce.

I believe my mechanic friend did check the TFI but I will double check on that...the fuel pressure remains good when warmed up. Forgot to mention we even swapped the computer - no change.

Thanks for the input - will let you know what we find

check the connectors/ wires good look for burnt cracked or grounded wires or corroded terminals also do you have a knock sensor it would be down by the starter screwed into the block check the connector with someone tapping on the block next to it and the timing light on the timing should retard with the tapping. put some seafoam into a spray bottle and spray it into the TB and give it a good shot till it almost dies feathering the throttle then turn it off and put the rest in the tank wait ten minutes then take it for a drive and get it good and warm at higher speeds to clean the carbon off the heads or since you dont have a cat you can pour some ATF dexron II in the throttle body slowly at about 2500 rpm rev it up then pour some water down and to clean the heads and get the valves spinning.

Will any type of automatic transmission fluid work for doing this and what's the best way for to pour some water in?

Do you put in the throttle body?

How does this get the valves spinninng?

Are they suppose to spin?
