The nut that holds the EGR tube onto the exhaust will not budge!! I have sprayed with liquid wrench and used all the force I could. Any tricks to getting this thing off?

You will probably have to put some heat to it.

I have never done that. I have dumb questions. Do I heat up the nut with a propane torch? How hot should it get?

Get it a little hot...then see if it moves. If it doesn't move, get it a little hotter...etc...

every one ive ever touched has broken off on me (mostly 2nd and 3rd gens), which leads to a whole new set of problems. as previous members have said, use heat and and constant pressure on the wrench instead of short busts of pressure (can cause the corners of the nut to round off when using heat).

the other thing to try it PB blaster. spray it on every day for a week or two and then try it.......
if you use heat (propane) goto the hardware store and get a small fireproof blanket that they sell for plumbing. it's about 8x11 in size and less than $20 and you use it as a back drop to proteck everything while you are putting the torch to it.
on my ERG i cut it close and then used a torch to take the nut off. I then used a large Flare tool (slide the nut on and use some imagination to flare it so it tightens and wont slip off) to flare the end of the EGR tube and it went back fine.
better cuz now it doesnt rattle.

A propane torch should be fine. They also sell little tanks of Natha gas which gets a little hotter.we have usaully get it red hot.Are you changeing the tube?If you are, just cut the pipe off and put a box end on it.

I will try the propane torch and yes 4b316 I needed to change (or get rid of as it has cracks all in it) the EGR tube. Cutting the tube and then using a socket on it sounds like a great idea. Thanks.

egr systems are a pain in the ass to work on. I had to do the pb blaster regiment for like 3 days before i could get anything to budge + heat

i did one of these like 2 hours ago i had to pull the manifold anyway so i disconnected the tube from the egr seemed to come out pretty easy due to not being hot then cold then hot then cold from daily driving then i twisted and pulled the manifold with the tube still attached out which was no easy task but its possible once i got it out i used a torch and heated it red hot and slowly cranked it until it was off whenever the red faded i added heat but its alot easier than doing it in the truck and you dont have to worry about crispy harnesses only took about 20 min total to do it it worked for me i hope this helps

I had a similar problem with my 2.0...using the biggest 1" (or was it 7/8"?) wrench I could find I put that on the nut and used a hammer going back and forth till it loosened the nut...

When I finally got the nut to move, however, it was rusted hard to the tube and I mangled the end of it...this was the reason (to price a new tube) I was in a Canadian Tire store on the morning of the Twin Tower attacks...I have hated EGRs ever since...

An alternative solution...which worked out well for me...was to cut the tube just above the nut, remove the tube from the EGR on the other side (or above on FI)...remove the exhaust manifold bolts completely...and grab a shorty header from a 93 or later engine...

This, however, will only work with emissions if you get the tube also...and it needs to fit your current system...

If you are not worried about emission testing then don't even bother with it...

i sprayed pb blaster on it and used a tubing wrench with a cheater wrench, using a regular wrench will round off the corners of the nut.
