My friend had this tire laying around and its a 31" so I thought I could use it as a spare. I don't even know if it holds air but would it even mount with this gash? It's only about an inch long.
Can this tire be mounted?

Yes. My superswampers were 10x worse than that and they didnt leak at all. I'd keep an eye on it though and wouldnt really recommend it for long drives

If you glue the bead back down with Bead Sealer it has a decent chance at beading up and holding air. If you cut that flap off, its junk.

The hardest part is going to be finding a tire shop that will actually mount it for you. It should be fine up until air gets in and causes the tire to seperate.

Very true. I think you will have a hard time getting someone to mount it. I would personally find a used tire for 30 bucks instead of risking it. That's too nice of a rig you've got to go cheap on a tire..... even if it is just a spare.

Alright I'll just toss it. Thanks for the help.

that will work use some bead sealer on it

This is what I was thinking too.

I know for a fact that I've done worse damage to low-pros just trying to get them on the rim. Slapped some bead sealer on, aired them up, and shipped it. Never had a problem.

I'll get some bead sealer next week and try it. I might as well try if I have the tire already.

If your mounting it as a spare you can put it on yourself with some lube (WD40, PBblaster, etc) and a couple big flat head screw drivers.

Tire irons with the flat head side work too.

I agree, give it a whirl and tell us how it holds up!

just use soap to mount it.....

would not according to that pic give it a second thought....

I don't think it is really that big of a deal, i talked to an old timer that was a tire tech for 15 years and showed him the pictures, he was pretty confident that with some bead sealer there would be no issues with mounting that up. Tire stores will not touch that tire, so just mount it up yourself. Doesn't hurt to try :icon_thumby:.
