So I sold my 2003 with the FX4 level ii LSD 4.10. Guy drives it about 300 miles home and all is well. Next day... bang. Hole in the rear diff cover. Something busted out. He says its not my fault but I still feel bad. What in the world could have caused this? I let it sit for about 9 months. Cranked it and drove it around the field every few weeks. 4wd hi and low and 2wd just to keep things lubricated. Any ideas of cause and what all will be broken as a result (axle splines, pinion gear, etc)? He says he drove it home in 4Lo.

What caused it? Hard to say. A spider can go flying, but usually something has to have happened to the king pin first, which usually means something happened to the Jesus bolt.

As for what else is broken, I would not trust any of it. Carrier, side/spider gears, ring or pinion.

Next issue. A FX4 L2 has a Torsen limited slip unit. There aren't any side or spider gears, so that is not what went through the cover.

does that translate into: quick, hold my beer

Maybe that was one of the early Thorsens that was supposed to be recalled and replaced. Being in 4-lo shouldn't have anything do do with the failure unless he had front hubs locked , driving on dry roads and I would expect that to mess up the transfer case, not a diff.

Why on earth did he drive home in 4 low anyway?

It still wouldn't have spiders. Torsen units use a series of worm gears.
