Hey everyone, new here so i'll start by saying that I love these forums. Theres a lot of great people and a lot of great information. With that being said, I'm having trouble starting my 86 2.9. It'll turn over but usually won't start until the 3rd or 4th try. Sometimes it'll start if i leave the key on for a few seconds before starting but recently its been starting and then dying immediately if i don't hold down the gas peddle.. Now, i know its gotta be the fuel pump but i looked it up and found out that theres two fuel pumps as i'm sure all of you know, one near the engine and one in the tank. Does anyone know how i can find out which one is the culprit before i go and buy one? Or which ones have a tendency to go out? Any help i can get will be very much appreciated!!!

I just went through this with my 88, if the link works here it is: http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=129690

With a helper to turn the key on, crawl under the truck. You can see the high pressure pump on the frame rail about were the drivers floorboard is. One hand on it and one on the tank and you will know which is working.

I have never had an external high pressure pump fail, but have changed four or five in tank pumps. Fortunately, the Ranger tank is one of the easiest I have ever had to lower.

Just who's bright idea was it to put a fuel pump in a tank with no drain vavle??

To get the fuel out before taking the tank loose, a 3/8" fuel hose was the largest hose I could get fully into the tank; I tried a 1/2" hose first, (since I had it) and was only able to get three gallons out. With the 3/8" one, I was able to get an additional 9 gallons.

Be careful of the R clips on the fuel lines, the new pump won't come with new ones.

To get any kind of warrantiy with the pump, you will need to replace the fuel filter at the same time. The wix filter came with two of the R clips and if you are careful removing the old ones, that will be enough.

I also used neversieze on the mounting bolts for the tank and skidplate of my 4x4; I am planning on keeping it a while.

Good luck,

Robert

This is perfect, thanks a lot! I suspected it was the fuel tank pump but really wanted to hear out some opinions before i went ahead and purchased the pump.

You should put a fuel pressure gauge on it first and make sure you have less than 30-40 psi.

FWIW I have had a high pressure pump fail. Just the one, and it was really old.
