It was mounted under the metal panel on the top of the dash and I removed it to access the aftermarket stereo and it's not attached to anything. This truck originally had the factory "Premium Sound System" in it but was replace by the previous owner. Was it part of the original system?

Not a clue, or even a guess :)

Early Premium Sound amp. The earliest trucks had a mono speaker lcation in the center of the dash along with the smaller outboard speakers for stereo units.

The Premium Sound amp was mounted in the unused mono speaker location.

Later trucks deleted the mono speaker option, but I think I remember the PS amps still being mounted in that same location.

That's a very cool relic.

Sounds like a reasonable and well explained idea of what that is

I don't believe a word of it, except "cool" :)

Well . . . it is a relic.

Back in the day, that amp would make the BeeGees sound almost as good as Hendrix.

my '87 Taurus wagon had one mounted in the rear.
