This may be a really stupid sounding question, but this is my first automatic. Can
I shift between drive and overdrive whilst driving? And when should I be in overdrive rather than drive? I sometimes pull a 17' ski boat as well!

overdrive always unless of two of the following conditions:

1) you are towing your boat, or you have a heavy load in the bed
2) you're going up a mountain and it keeps downshifting and upshifting over and over.

and yes, you can shift freely between the two while driving.

If im not going over 45 i will leave it in Drive. Once i hit highway speeds, its overdrive.

He had it right. If you notice it shifting back and forth a lot, downshift it.
