Can I replace the motor in my Ranger with an out of state motor?

I live in California and obviously we have to smog our vehicles. I roasted the 4.0 in my 93 Ranger and Im looking at a 4.0 out of a 92 explorer from out of state. Is there anything different about these motors aside from the bolt on smog stuff? Basically what Im wanting to know is if I'd be able to smog it?

I thought an engine swap had to be the same year or newer for Cali rules... Also, the out of state motor might not be EGR equipped (which would kill your visual inspection if it is supposed to have it)...

Yeah I heard something like that, but how would they know I even changed the motor? Also would I be able to take the EGR off of the old motor and put it on the new one?

If you just use the long block of a 4.0 of the same year or newer, you can swap all your stuff over to it. Just swap in your intake (from the manifold up), exhaust, all the sensors and you should be golden.

On a 1993 a cali 4.0 ranger might not have EGR, if it doesn't unless someone starts looking at individual parts they'd never know.

From what I've heard the people who actually do a cali "visual"
are as lazy as most other people can be...

However if you DO have EGR (drivers exhaust manifold and upper intake)
you'll need to not only swap that over, but you'll also need to swap over
the cam synchronizer for the SEFI system to work.

And regardless of the above you'll need to swap over the injectors from
your "old" engine because the ones on the 1993-94 are different from
the 1990-92 4.0 engines.

I live in san diego, you can do the engine swap as long as it the same block and you put the factory smog parts back on the new engine. you shouldn't have any issues. the problem is when you upgrade your engine to fuel injection for a carb.
