I want to update my 86 Ranger 2.3L (gas) with a 2.3L out of a 94 Ranger. Any other mods needed other than using the computer module and harness? Are the motor mounts the same, etc? I want to do this to move away from throttle body to more modern fuel injection. Suggestions? Thank You!

Hypothetically, anything can be done...the details are what tend to get in the way and make a simple process cost more than it should.

The 2.3 block was the same up through to 94 when the oil pump was moved to a direct drive from the pulley...as opposed to an indirect drive though the auxiliary shaft...so it may fit the current motor mounts from the 86. The frame and attachments from 83 to 97 were very similar with minor changes and enhancements here and there.

The 94 should actually have a drive for the oil pump that could be used to drive a distributor...but that's not what you want...

So...the electronic engine controls are needed for sure if you are using the 94 fuel injection...the computer included...and that is where there is a big difference...the computer on the 94 is probably mounted inside the firewall and pokes through to the inside of the cab...the 86 had the computer inside the cab on the passenger side behind the kick panel...maybe they didn't change that till later on like 95 or 96...but if I recall correctly they changed it in 93...

I am in the process of dealing with this myself and I've a few options...one would be to simply hang the computer in a protective box inside the engine bay and hope it doesn't get too hot or wet...or...cut and splice in a section that would allow the computer to be inside the cab...or...cut the firewall in a similar fashion as the later models and insert the computer...

I'm going with the hanging of the computer...off the MAP sensor hangar that you should have on the passenger side...and securing it as well as protecting it from the elements...

Other than that...you can dabble with the controls and wiring...the battery box or tray should be on the passenger side...later models had it on the driver side but not sure when that changed...but the wiring may not be a perfect fit...so be prepared to make adjustments and make sure you have everything grounded before plugging in the computer...

A few other minor things like where the alternator is located and the associated wiring...rad and hoses are very similar so not a problem there...transmission shouldn't matter too much but the computers are spec'd out to shift electronically...but not until 96 (or 95) so...should be ok there...
