Yes that will def cause the NOX to be up, clean the intake with a vacumm cleaner sucking up all you can. If it's running hot when is it running hot idle running down road?

Well to be honest i havent driven it much no more than 30 miles...
Just been tryin to get it running right 1st!

yea i will clean it for sure when i do my valves becuase all the stuff will be off...

What about the EGR it seems to be working properly... would a gunked up intake make it seem my egr isnt working? i cant think any other things? I pulled it off... Cleaned the holes out... Made sure the vacum was holding and pulling that stopper and it was smooth gliding after the cleaning... Inside was good... i dont know? When i put it back on to test it hooked up vac line to it pumped and not a single change happened... remained exactly the same... to where my friends same thing his died right away!

and do i have the green light on the tstat? good idea?

Well if the intake is plugged up you will have no flow so it won't function so yes. The t-stat if new should be ok, check the fan clutch, radiator cap, first and go form there.

Yea i know my cap is bad... its already on my shopping list!

Will check the fan clutch today...

And the intake will come off next weekend...

Update:
Did my Valve stem seals...
Let me say WOW! out of 12 Seals i would say 10 were broken in half and 8 werent seated all the way down haha...
Cleaned out the intake...
WOW about 2" thick of carbon buildup in the exhaust crossover passages...
So thick i carefully took a dremel to the carbon to clean it out with a vacum on hand for dust...
Found there was no T-stat in my engine...
The Thermostat sender housing was snapped in half and the prev owner put it back together using a
Sh!T load of silicone ahha hilarious....

Im still hunting down a vac leak causing a VERY annoying stumble...
Me and a friend have been looking for it for about 4-5 days

Did you pull that truck out of a swamp? You should look into swapping out the engine, redoing the vacuum lines, and pretty much redoing the whole front end...It just sounds like that engine is going to be one problem after the next...the previous owner didnt take care of it and ghetto rigged it.

Feel behind the carburator, there should be a few rubber plugs, if there is a slight crack in any hose it will leak.

Did you pull that truck out of a swamp? You should look into swapping out the engine, redoing the vacuum lines, and pretty much redoing the whole front end...It just sounds like that engine is going to be one problem after the next...the previous owner didnt take care of it and ghetto rigged it.

LOL No... No Swamps here i think the prev owner just had
0$ and one big A$$ tube of silicone and a sh!t load of time...
Im doing a rebuild this winter on a seperate engine...

Ehh its nothing to me i have a DD and picked it up for 350...
The most i spent in parts was 89 bucks which included
Muffler, o2, Rad Cap, Valve Cover gaskets, t stat
then 30 for new seals
and 20 on carb and intake gaskets...
Just a project for me... not sooo bad!

Yea thanks robbie... Pretty funny my 1st oil change was less than a month ago! And yea its saved me a bunch of money plus the knowledge... its amazing...

HAHA! Well the only reason i knew something was up was becuase my egr was inoperative... i bench tested it and worked 100% so my next guess was plugged passages on the crossover...
HOLY CRAP...
I think it was caused from running rich plus burning a crap load of oil but then again just a guess!

Being a 83 your going to have to change the valve guide seals anyway they will be bad unless they were changed previous mine was tapping not knocking but it dont take it being very far to sound like knocking I noticed when I loosened one too much. Every time you disconnect the battery for 15 min it resets the computer so clear the codes then disconnect the battery whenever you change any emission part then run it at at least 10 to 15 minutes at at least medium speeds for the computer to set new values. Fix first codes first check wires and grounds and connectors then retest after every new part installed. Sorry for your bad luck being in california I durasparked mine and brought it to life hopefully you will get lucky and get the emission BS all to work together GL
