Can I delete this housing and how?

I was suppose to go out of down tonight but this damn housing is stopping me. I have an 87 Ranger with a 2.9. I was changing the fluids and fuel filer in preparation for my trip. I took this housing apart because I forgot the 87 and newer had a canister filter further up the frame rail. I guess I pinched the O ring inside because it was leaking fuel during my test drive. I found another O ring in my drawer but it will not stay put because it has been twisted for so long. The big problem is the spring loaded valve inside fell apart. I know I cannot get one of these at my local parts store. So can just delete it altogether? I see no reason for it. My plan was to bend and flare some metal line and stick them in its place. I would use the same size so the stock fuel lines will connect the same way with the same retainers. Any suggestions?

It serves a purpose, which has been discussed at length, and I don't fell like repeating it, again, right now.

If you are in a pinch, yes, you can delete it. You may notice some issues on heavy accel though.

What about simply cruising at highway speed? Also, how do I repair the valve inside? I cannot crack ti open to get to it.

At cruise you should be fine. As for repairing it, I've never been dumb enough to take one apart.

I would not have cracked it open had I known the fuel filter was further up the frame. I do not know why that valve fell out of the hole. I did not mess with it.

Because the ones after 86 weren't meant to be opened.

And don't guess at stuff. If you don't 100% know what you are doing go read the instructions.

Also, not sure how you figured on fitting this:

in there.

seriously man, you've never made a mistake? It's called being human damn man. The last first gen Ranger I had was an 86 and that was a decade ago. The fuel filter with a cartridge that went in that housing.

I've made lots of mistakes in my life. I wake up, get out of bed, and go to a job where I work on cars, there are three huge mistakes that I make five days a week. I also frequently answer the phone when my sister in law calls and expect it to be something other than "my car is broken".

I've just never made THAT mistake.

It will do me no good to get the O ring in place if I cannot get that valve back together. I do not know why it even fell out.

Can you get pics of the insides?

That little round piece was sitting flush in the center of the other brown piece. I have a screw driver holding it ij place now. If I take it out the piece will fall back in and rattle around. It has a spring on it but is not connected to anything.

What about putting in another large fuel filter in it's place? Edit; or two. It would also act somewhat as an accumulator.

You can bypass the inline fuel pump. Lol I'd just go buy a new one and be done with it. Lesson learned. Pay attention and be diligent. Working on cars isn't a game. There's children and peoples familys on the road also. The inline fuel pump pushes the one in the tank pulls. Your truck will struggle on inclines and heavy acceleration. Go buy a pump. Bypassing it will be a pain.
