can a D28 handle v8 and 35s?

just wondering how strong the stock d28 is. im running 31 inch swampers right now and i have a set of 35-12.5 Xterrians that i want to put on but im worried that the combination of big tires and the 306 and having AWD t-case will eat it alive. what do you guys think? thanks

ha that strong huh? so how long you think it will last with alot of road time and takin it easy offroad. im thinkin maybe use it till it breaks then put D44 and 9-inch in the back? or would that not even be worth it? thanks

the d28 is a crap unit. guys have been known to blow them up with stock v-6s and stockish tires...it will be dead in very short order with those big meats and a small block.

a 44 would give you all the strength you need, but i wouldnt rule out a d35 swap just yet. its an easier swap and the 35 is a respectable front end that, with a few easy mods, can be made even stronger.

your running an AWD case huh? whats it from? how do you like it? what made you decide to go that route?

You guys say that, but then you have people like MoabB2 on BroncoII.org that ran trails around Moab in a V8 BII with 35" tires and a D28 for quite some time. All depends on who's behind the wheel and how you use the skinny pedal.

That being said, I wouldn't run a D28 with a V8 in a wheeling truck. If you did some how manage to get it to live a while (like MoabB2 did) it would still always be in the back of your mind that you will eventually grenade it. It could happen at a very inconvenient time/place and turn into a big pain in the ass. If you're gonna wheel it, upgrade. If you're just going to drive it, run it till it breaks and then upgrade.

Um, didn't Jim Oaks run a Dana 28 with a v8 and 35's in TRS-1 for a while without any problems?

it all depends on the driver, it will last forever on the road. for it to last offroad you need to be easy on the throttle especially when turning. i've been running 39 boggers with a welded 28 for almost 2 years, its a DD and i've wheeled it hard all day in the mud with no problems, then some times i'll be crawling in the mud and brake something. hubs is usually what breaks, if the hub doesnt brake then the u-joint breaks and alot of time causes the axle shaft to break.

i've been running 39 boggers with a welded 28 for almost 2 years, its a DD and i've wheeled it hard all day in the mud with no problems.

are you sure your not feeding a line of BS here. a friend of mine broke stuff constantly with 39 inch boggers on a d44........

i have had this 88 for 2 years and it is a daily driver and very mild wheeling and i am on my 3 axle shaft in it getting ready for #4 or a d35 swap

yea its a c6 tranny and np203 out of a bronco. i already had the case and you dont hear of to many awd v8 rangers. havent actualy drove it with awd yet cause my front driveshaft is being made right now but it should do just fine on the road with the diff unlocked in the case and should rip offroad locked in. i got a buddy with a d35 that im gonna try to get but i think im gonna do a little ''research'' and see how long it can stand the tires, motor, awd and my heavy ass foot and when it breaks ill swap it out.

The D28 is one spindly little axle. I s'pose if you really really baby it, it can live, but then what's the point of having a V8?

Get the D35. It bolts right in ('cept for the driveshaft needing to be shortened 1"), and with a couple minor mods, is as strong (if not stronger) than a stock D44.

My '86 (Black frog) ate about 6 axles within a month. I put in a d-35 and haven't had a single problem since. It has a 3.0 (swapped in from an '86 Aerostar) and 31" tires. Now mind you there are many people here that say a 3.0 doesn't make enough torque to be worth owning. It is definatly WAY less torque than a decent 306. No, I'm not easy on it, AT ALL! It is stricktly an offroad truck.
The only problem with keeping it 'till it breaks is that it WILL break at the worst possible time.
