Was doing a full engine rebuild of 95 3.0L Ranger and during a flip of the engine the camshaft position sensor fell off.

Of course I noticed it a little too late and was installing pistons so the crank had turned.

I didn't have the tool but thought if I put the #1 at TDC then made sure the spinning vain was pointing at #1 then it would all work out (treating it like an old school distributor).

Got truck rebuilt and put back together and it cranked but wont idle, needs a lot of gas to run on out decent, and my first thought is that I am out of time bc of that camshaft position sensor.

Is there a way to do it without the tool, no marks to go by, just get on TDC #1 and position it how??? Anyone got a pic of what it looks like when on TDC?

You put cyl 1 at TDC and center the vane in the window.

I did it without the tool. I put#1 cyl to tdc (the marks on the crank pulley and indicator lined up) and then did the 34mm piece of tape after the line to bring it slightly ATDC. I took pics and notes of both the inner and outer positions before removing the synchro assembly. I just kept it pinched when installing to keep it in position, and set it in exactly how my old one came out. It took a few tries to line up the teeth perfect, but it all worked out.
