Camshaft inplay

If you don't have a gauge to indicate the clearance on the camshaft inplay, is there another way to gauge this?

If we are talking about end play - the amount that a cam goes back and forth in the block, feeler gauges could be used instead of a dial gauge. In these engines, a good estimate should work.
