Crazy day. Middle of September. Full moon.
Wanted to test drive the new 93 Ranger.
I went up to help my friend Nick mess around with his old fireplace insert. They took it out a couple years ago. Good idea to supplement oil heat with a woodstove these days. I had seen an ad on Craigslist for bigger wheels for my new truck. It was in Ringwood, NE NJ ; farther up than Nicks.
Nick was cleaning up his woodstove, I got in touch with the tire sellers by email and cel. Nick went up with me, he knows the area. Nice country ride. We met the dude at a country store, tires and wheels looked good. $200. Threw them in the bed and headed back. There's a big Shoprite near there and we stopped to get food. Nick went in and I waited in the huge parking lot. I didn't want to leave my tires in the truck so he went in for prepackaged sushi. Some guy comes walking up to me like he knows me. He goes, "Is that a 93?". He had just pulled up in an identical 93 white Ford Ranger. What are the odds of that? We talked a while then he left. His truck had a lot of rust. I just cleaned up my engine compartment it looks 90%. Nick came back and started preparing his sushi on his lap while I drove away.
I started smelling burning brakes. I thought it was his sushi. hahahahaha Eventually I knew it was the truck. It was putting a big smell into the cabin and it started pulling to the right. My right front caliper seized. That amount of friction generates unbelievable heat. When I pulled over, the brake pads were billowing smoke! sux. Then I thought an old lady was laughing madly at my misfortune in the house we were in front of. It was a duck. A freakin duck.
I called AAA and that was kind of a hassle, bad reception, etc. 1- 1 1/2 hrs to wait the lady told me.
I got out the jack (virgin jack) and I took the tire off. The lug nuts were so hot they heated up the lug wrench by the time I got them off. The hub boiled my spit, it was hot. I took the tire iron and wedged it between the outer pad and the caliper. Pried on it carefully and the caliper loosened up. I cancelled the tow and we decided to drive back. I was trying not to use the brakes in hilly mountain country. Got back to his place and the caliper didn't seize. Took it home another 35 miles very gently. I'll take it all apart and check it out tomorrow. Rotor is glazed badly. Pads gotta be shot. It might not have been the piston but the the metal clad rubber retainers between the caliper and caliper mount. I used to coat never- seize on those when I did a brake job to keep them lubricated. I'll pop the pistons and see what they look like. An old truck with low miles aint like a new truck with low miles.....

That last statement said it all- I would always go for late model higher miles than older model low miles- with a few exceptions.

Sounds like you got it figured out tho and saved the dough on the tow... Damn, I'm a poet and don't even know it!!

man calipers for these things are cheap, id just buy a new/ rebuilt one because chances are if the hub and the rotor got that hot the seals inside the caliper have been damaged, not to mention the effect that kind of heat had on the brake fluid in your caliper. but you were smart to take off the wheel and check it out instead of driving it the rest of the way home like many people would do.

Might as well change the flex hose while you're at it.

I've seen them act like a checkvalve.

Man you should have seen the smoke puff up out of the right wheel well when I pulled over!! I should have just got loaded calipers they are cheap. I pulled the caliper off this morning, the seal was baked and done for. Brake hose looked OK (I gotta stop someplace for now....)
I have been using http://www.Rockauto.com and they haven't let me down yet. I sent for new rotors, caliper rebuild kits, service grade pads and inner seals. A little on the cheap but I enjoy rebuilding calipers. I should have got new pistons but that phenolic can really take it lol. (Which means I should have just got loaded calipers.) I just got this truck and now I'll do a much more thorough maintenance on it. The cooling system is done, the thermostat housing had the kind of black gritty rusty crud in it that comes from an old man using the truck only on weekends for the flea market. There is no rust on this truck except surface "sitting" rust, it's amazing. Too bad the bed was pummeled by firewood. Now I'm really getting into Rangers again. With the gas prices this will cost 1/2 what my GMC does.....
