California on fire...

Whats up with the conspiracy theory about the blue 60's VW bus that (supposdly) was parked in the middle of the fire the whole time but survived unscathed?

I seen an article or two but didnt know how reliable they were.

I worked on a bunch of VW busses in the past. I don't blame fire for not wanting to touch one.

A buddy of mine back in the early 90's had one. I really dont get the appeal either.

They were gutless, super noisy inside, and blown around by the wind. Air cooled VW cooling was uneven so the #3(front left) exhaust valve would overheat, the head would "tulip"and then fall into the cylinder and smash the piston into fragments. Next the rod would bash holes in the case under the shroud and the fan would blow oil everywhere. Then I'd have to stick my head- with my shoulder length hair- into the engine bay to unbolt the upper bell housing bolts. If you take the wheels off a bus it would make a good chicken coop.

It wasn't parked next to enough flammable fuel to get it lit. Lone houses have survived too.

Pretty sure the wheels on the bus are supposed to go round and round...

The "therory" came from the Lahina (sp?) fire that was supposedly caused by laser fire from the Airborn Laser aircraft called the ABL (there was a 747 modified with a chemical laser to see how viable such a thing would be. Apparently, it was pretty successful). It was noticed that the houses in Hawaii that didn't burn all had blue roofs, or supposedly that was the case.

So, the blue VW didn't burn when the directed energy weapon (DEW) from the ABL was used to burn things down. Atleast that is the "theory".

The aircraft is a real aircraft and it disappeared from any kind of reports after the initial rounds of testing was completed. Not much was reported on how well it worked or anything but I imagine it would have been a mostly secret project in the beginning and if it worked really well, would have gone full secret. Conversely, if it had been a failure, they would have stopped testing. Either way, it disappeared from any kind of reporting.

They also had electrical issues. Atleast the camper van version my parents had did.

No, aircraft was mothballed. It will be hard to find because it has been scrapped.

Fairly new and low hour, chemicals from the laser contaminated it. Semi common topic on boneyard groups.

Don't all VW's have electrical issues?

(The aircraft is ) Probably at the base in Tucson mostly intact but "scrapped in place"

I know the van and the Jetta we had both did.

It was looking pretty tough when it was marked "scrapped in place" 10 years ago. After 3 years of storage it was missing all the engines a lot of control surfaces and who knows what else.

Not like the military hasn't bumbled its way into something similar before though (in the same area even)

so that Volkswagen was from Hawaii?

I don’t know if I ever shared it, but this was one of my toys before my Ranger fetish.

73. Super beetle. A guy in New Jersey made the Rolls kit, and I use the 60s bumpers. Everybody’s seen one, but the guy only made 38 kits and then was sued by Rolls and had to crush his molds and his inventory. Only about 30 got out.

It was a fun little fart around car. The best part? It was a chick magnet. Women absolutely could not stay away from it. They’d step off the curb when I was at a stoplight. Big ones, little ones, young ones, old ones. Fun buggy.

I thought of it because I found the kit in a junkyard on a bug that was a dumpster fire.

now, maybe you can see where my Ranger inspiration started…

Everyone knows them because of the movie Major League.
