CAFE standards... rolled back

Oh, I know you can, but you still have chemicals that can leach into the soil and if it is ever removed, they don’t have to remove everything and restore it back.
I've not heard about chemicals leaching in. From what? Where is the source?

I suppose paint/plastic coatings.

As opposed to all the chemicals farmers dump on crops in addition to the occasional blown hydraulic hose/incidentals I doubt its all that much.

which brings up another issue, methane emissions :icon_rofl:

there are always consequences

Usually farmground is worth too much to be outright idled by solar so it is hillier ground or otherwise not suitable for farming... and was likely pasture already.

Pasture is much less intrusive than like a confinement building.

Urban sprawl irritates me much more than the green stuff.

Good farmground being levelled out so they can build worker bee condos/apartments is really hot around Omaha right now and I hate it.

on the battery lifespan issue, the original one in my 2019 Edge was still going strong when replaced last month.
replacement is a Motorcraft.

In high school during the 70's gas crisis I got a friend to draw a cartoon for the school newspaper. Basically it was a methane collector attached to the back end of a cow.

I did some quick research. While I dont doubt your numbers, I found that there are alternatives. Not all batteries need full replacement, from what I read very few do. There are modules that make up a full battery pack and most times replacing the bad module or 2 will be all that is needed. Or maybe its just replacing ancillary parts. Used batteries are available. Also the battery doesnt just end of life at end of warranty, it sounds like its good for 15 years or 300,000 miles before problems start cropping up, and far fewer problems than ice engines. I still think that EV is the future because there is a finite amount of carbon base fuel. Gasoline and deisel are not going to disappear any time soon but the sooner we get to EV the better, IMO.

Article from a local mechanic;

The F150 battery contains 10 cells that are replaceable separately, they were $7500 each plus installation a couple years ago. When a single cell is replace, it has to be programmed- effectively turning down the wick- to match the output of the other cells. The older the battery, the shorter the range. I can't see salvage yard dismantlers handling EV batteries safely so I question buying a used one. There may be an EV battery that lasts 15 years but there won't be many.

My local u-pull it has caught on fire like 3 times in the last 5 years trying to process normal vehicles before they go onto the lot lol.

Coatings, lubricants, chemicals from solar panels when they get smashed up from hail or the like…

That is a good point about the farmers dumping stuff on the property too though.

Yeah, urban sprawl and now the huge data centers are becoming a real issue. More than wind and solar here. That’s becoming the fight in our local township, they want to force out all but two farmers and turn everything into “rural estates” with a house on 1-2 acres and fill up the township like that. The residents here for the most part don’t want it. The people that stand to gain financially are pushing hard for it.

In theory, hybrids should be able to keep their drivetrain/traction batteries healthier for longer; as they don't need to eek out every last mile out of each charge, the battery management systems can avoid deep discharges and full charges that shorten their lifespan.

Obviously using gas engines as generators rather than for propulsion is better too as you can tune them for max efficiency running at optimum load etc.

Mine isn't dead. 2004. Just turned 77,000 miles last week.

unless something changed, i think ford still uses them on 6.7s

but anyways, more or less just trying to prove a point

Both my 98 Ranger and my 04 Lightning have fan clutches. I prefer that over electric fans. I don't know what happened, or how it happened. Tried fitting an electric fan kit into my 04 Lightning a few years back. Kit came with a Mustang fan. First time it came on, it caught fire. Scared the living bejesus out of me. Took all that crap out, put the clutch fan back on. Never again.

Does this mean that the next time i take m y 98 Ranger to an oil change place, they won't tell me it needs w-20 colored water? My oil filled cap says 10w-30. Owners manual talks 10w-30, 10w-40 and 20w-50. I ran the latter most of the 28 years I've owned it. Currently running 10w-40 because due to noisy start up when it's frigid outside.

I took it to a Valvoline joint a mile away a couple years ago. Told them to put 20w-50 in it. They refused and told me it had to have 5W-20. I told them they could fvck right off. Change it myself now. What happened to "The customer is always right"?
