Cable broke loose?

I was taking thing valve cover off and noticed that to the right of the distributor, there are 2 cables going through the firewall, and the one closest to the distributor with the square end is broken off? I noticed a while back that my tachometer wasn't working as it had jumped back to like -7 though it does show when you rev up, just not in the right place? This be the cause? If not, is it worth fixing?

Think that one may be the transmission cable if not the accelerator cable, it's an auto correct? Want to get that fixed up or else it will cause late shifts. I broke mine on accident pulling the engine out and just epoxied the stupid thing back into place.

May have a cluster issue w/ the tach, might hook up an aftermarket tach temporarily to the negative side of the coil and see if it works correctly. If it works, can either try and fix or replace the cluster, or just use the aftermarket one you have and install in the cab.

Haha thats the problem, it didn't just pop out, the cable broke into 2 pieces. You're correct, it is an auto. And if all it does it cause late shifting thats fine, because I drive it hard anyway. I'm not concerned with gas, as it isn't my DD.

Yeah, the tach looks as if it popped out of groove? I was under the hood, and told my buddy to rev it and he revved it up a tad bit too much, and I noticed it after this.

Think you're going to need it. I am not real similar with the internals of the A4LD, or much transmission stuff, but something tells me that the transmission probably depends on that (could be pressure related). And when I say late shift, I mean really late (like +3500rpm). Think I still have mine lying around, I'll have to check and see and if it is salvageable. If it is, would just give to you if you'd want to pay for shipping.

Not real sure on the tach, had any of the pointers been removed for white gauge faces or anything like that? Still would be curious to hook up a separate tach for a sanity check.

I went to the JY today and took one off a bronco II, or at least the end going through the firewall. It looks as if it hooks the accelerator pedal to the tranny, though im not sure where on the tranny.

Got a new gauge cluster to fix the tach.

Good deal. Can't remember how it hooks up to the trans either, but might not be that bad since I only usually remember stuff that's a pain in the ass lol. Like unhooking the speedometer cable from behind the cluster, that will have you pissed off in no time.

Edit

I had the top of the dash out and was able to access the cable just barely. But a simpler solution might be to unhook the cable from the transmission, remove any hold downs for the cable under the truck, I know there's one by the gas pedal, so that you'll be able to pull the cluster forward. They give you literally no slack on the speedometer cable once the cluster is loose. If you do unhook the speedometer cable from transmission, there's a special way this must be done. The retaining clip in the speed sensor must stay in the speed sensor. You expand the legs of the clip while it's in the speed sensor and pull the cable out, and reverse with installation. Should never try and remove the clip while the cable is in the speed sensor. But I will be curious to hear what you come up with on this.

Oh yes, it was a terrible pain at the JY. I thought I was going to end up cutting the cable off right behind it, but all I had with me yesterday was a screwdriver and a couple wrenches. I messed with it for a long time, and I was about to give up when it just popped off. I could have lit the place on fire. Haha:temper:

got lucky :) Supposed to smash down on a part of the cable end to the cluster w/ your fingers and it just slides off real easy. Think they could have made it a little easier though.

I'm not going to try to put it back together until I get my new dash lights then.

and FYI, I found the proper name (Or common name) for that cable. It's known as a "kickdown" cable.
