Cab gets hot

I don't think it is really heat coming off the trans so much. All the air that goes through the radiator and through the engine compartment in general can only really go under the truck once it hits the firewall. Open a window and you get a nice siphen action that sucks the hot air from under the truck and into the cab.

With just the side window down my truck is unbearable, with the rear window open too it must overwhelm the furnace in the tranny hump because then it isn't bad at all.

I have a 1990 ranger V6 2.9L. The cab gets particularly hot in the summer, and it feels as though heat is coming from the tranny housing under the gear shifters. I'm being told it could be my exhaust manifold, and to get it checked. My exhaust was done a year ago, and it always passes air care, even with this is it possible that it is the exhaust manifold? I was thinking of putting an insulating wrap over it inside the truck so when I go camping I'm not sweating more than I already do in this heat in a non-a/c ride. Any suggestions?

You could easily be passing aircare with a bad manifold.

When "your exhaust was done" do you know what was actually replaced? Just muffler? Cat too? everything from the headers back??

All aircare does is check for visible leaks, then do an emissions test off the tail pipe, so if its not a huge leak they could be missing it. This would also cause your test results to be lower than they should be, so you might be passing when you would otherwise fail.

also, is this a auto or manual? 2wd or 4?

I don't see a bad manifold putting off enough heat to noticably change the cab temp.

I guess one question we need answered is the floor around the trans tunnel getting hot or is there hot air coming into the cab around the shifter area? If the floor is getting hot you can solve that with the insulating mat mentioned earlier. Hot air coming around the shifter is a different fix.

When I was adding the cable-operated shifter to my truck for about a week I did not seal up the 3" by 6" hole that I cut in the floorboard where the shifter is installed.....

once the engine warmed up---that little opening was like having my wifes blow-dryer stuck in my face...


you gotta realize that 180* plus hot air is rolling off the engine and the top of the transmission...

for some reason the trans tunnel acts more like a HOT air Funnel

Wow, thanks for all the advice guys....I have been MIA since I posted, and I will check out under my ride when I shut it down to see if something is glowing.

I have a 2.9L V6 for whoever asked if I had driven one.

And would love A/C but that's outside my budget and my belief system, lol....don't ask. lol

I put dynamat foil-backed insulation over the whole floorboard & an extra rubber boot over the rubber boot that came with the shifter....(next I' gonna stuff the primary boot with some type of insulation foam)

this is a great answer, but expensive.

Do check to see that nothing is glowing cherry red before you shut off the ignition. Do it at dark time so you can see better if something is glowing, Bro!!

i think that was refering to someone who mentioned that you should just get A/C, as the A/C can have a huge draw on the the engine.

the other thing no one mentioned, is check your cats, to see if they have heat shields on or around them, there should be some heat shields, heat shields around the rest of the exhaust would help with your heat issue also, as i'm pretty sure that's where your heat issue is coming from.
