c6

Will it bolt up to a stock Ranger engine? No.

Will it physically fit in the chassis behind a V8? Yes.

I can't think of anyone on here that has done it but there are several that have done ZF 5 speed manuals and my buddy had a C6 in his Early Bronco (about the same space considerations there.) They are big but it certainly can be done.

thanks for replying. have a 302/c4 presently. have oppurtunity to buy 78 f150 4x4 with 400/c6/205. was wondering if doable.

The only problem I see there is that C6 will have a different bellhousing pattern and will not bolt up to your 302. The 205 will fit, I have one in my '86, I think it's the best full size t-case to put in a Ranger aside from an Atlas.

I don't know of anyone who has swapped a 400 into a Ranger but there might be someone who has - was it your intention to swap everything? They are somewhat larger and heavier than a 302, you will probably run into clearance issues with exhaust, heater box, not sure about the fan/radiator/etc.

read once somewhere that 302 bell housings an 400 were same. and yes i would if i could. looking into that now.

The 400 Cleveland does, the 400 Windsor is a different bolt pattern

The 400, as used in a 78 f150, has the same bellhousing bolt pattern as a 429/460.
I know this as I swapped in a 460 into a 78 f150 and used the same transmission.

I think I saw something about a C6 and another about a 400 (not the same threads) - the clearance issues are extreme in the 400, change to tiny electric steering due to interference with the engine and exhaust in that area... the C6 guy figured out he had to do a big body lift or smash the tunnel open a bunch (same issue with the T56, 6 speed manual).
I don't think either of those posted any finished and most likely couldn't finish.
FWIW, a guy my sister dated in highschool put a small block 400 in a Toy truck in like 1989 so probably a mid 80's toy.. it was so extreme he didn't have room for hood hinges, he had to use pins, but it ran, ran like a son of a. He was the fastest guy in town.

This is the definitive list of what is interchangeable:

C6's have an integrated bellhousing that cannot be removed. So if you want to use a C6 behind a 302, you must find one that was originally behind a small block engine... usually a 351 Windsor or a 300 inline six. Not commonly found behind 302's, usually find AOD's or C4's there. Small block pattern C6's are pretty common, you would be most likely to find one in a 1980 or newer truck.

A friend of mine had a 460 and a C6 in a 4x4 Ranger but it was on a full size Bronco frame. Usually you have to run fender exit headers & stuff there... it gets very complicated. Those engines are big, heavy and very wide.

I know another guy who had a 400 and a C6 in an Early Bronco... that fit fairly well, better than you would think.
