c4 to 2.3 question

Hi all, I'm new here but not to rangers or 'wheeling.

I'm planning on building another ranger. I have a bellhousing to mate the c4 to the 2.3l. My question is, what else do I need for that? Or is it as easy as just mating the two together? Like flywheel, starter, torque converter, etc?

I've searched and searched and can't find the exact info that I need.

Any help would be great!

Thanks,
John

not sure of the dimensions of the c4 vs what was in there originally, but you might have to shorten/lenghthen your drive shaft. also not sure if your flex plate is compatible with the torque converter for that transmission. If it is, your starter should be fine. if not that maybe an issue.

If your truck is newer and takes a computer controlled transmission you will also have a check engine light on after the swap.

Thanks AJ. So other than those possible problems is it a bolt on to the engine with no other stuff? I know i'm going to have to make a new crossmember and what not. That's no big deal. I just wanted to know if anyone here has done this swap and could give me some insight.

I have not done the swap, but I did do some related research a couple years ago. It has been a while, but what I do remember is that if you want to run an off the shelf 5.0 stall convertor, you need to do, or have someone do, some machine work on the back of your crankshaft. I was looking at running a machined crank, a bell housing adapter, and a 5.0 stall convertor with my 2.0. I haven't gotten around to it yet, but haven't totally dismissed the idea of doing it either. There is a guy modifying pinto stall convetors for higher stall speeds and the like, but he isn't cheap and you have to give him cores. I am almost certain I have some related material on my computer somewhere. I'll see If I can dig it up tomorrow night or Sunday morning. Oildrip, best of luck to you, and do us the favor, if you would, of posting up what you find and what you end up doing.

thanks for the info upnsmoke. I will post when I get it figured out. I need to finish gathering some more parts together first.

I had some measurements and part numbers saved on my computer somewhere, but I can't seem to find them. This thread may have some useful info in it- link- It has been a while since I read through it, but looking at it now, there are a couple links in it, and there could be something relevant for you. If you decide to go the adapter route, these two threads might be worth checking out- link 1 and link 2. Good luck with it. If I find the info I had on my computer I'll post that up, but I'm not sure I still have it.

thanks for those links. Looks like they were arguing over the v8 bellhousing. But I actually have a bellhousing from a 2.3L to mate the c4 trans. This came from a pinto that had that combination from the factory. That being said, I wonder if I needed anything that it would just be the flexplate, starter, and or torque converter from a pinto 2.3L?
