Hello friends,
Currently driving and constantly working on my v8 ranger with aod. The trans is very lazy unsure of mileage and abuse. But I also have a c4 again unsure of milage and abuse came from a 78 cougar. The ? Is what trans is a better all around trans for street and strip? Engine brings about 300 HP with mods daily driver and a lot of highway use so the of is nice but I plan on pushing it pretty hard.I have tried adjusting the line pressure through the middle line port, and she shifts all over the place also have a b&m shifter. Please most opinions will be greatful.

The OD in AOD is overdrive. A C4 is only 1:1 . A good un is a plenty rugged , but your MPG will be worse. I would be looking at rebuilding the AOD with heavy duty parts.

The thing to remember with the AOD is that proper adjustment of the TV cable is absolutely critical. If you have the cable off completely or misadjusted you can toast the trans in as little as 50 miles.

If you think it feels lazy or shifts erratically I would start by looking there.

Also, since the top ratio in a C4 is 1:1 and it's a non-lockup converter your final drive at the drive shaft is actually less than 1:1. If you drive any significant distance on the highway and go with the C4 you will probably end up selling the truck or swapping back to the AOD within a year over the bad gas mileage.

Thank you for the reply I watched a video on YouTube that claims to adjust the pressure with a engine oil pressure gauge to 35 psi in neutral with th little that comes with the Lokar kit then 0 psi with the tool off of the TV cable. I would really like to use this trans but its just so erratic.

With 3" lift, 31" mud tires and 3.73 gears I just got 9mpg hwy with mine as of night before last when I gassed up. It runs about 3k rpm going down the highway at 60mph.

I just can't get that wound up about swapping to an AOD, I am going to go with a M5OD sometime.

When I swapped I lived in town so big deal, of course a year and a half after that I got an acreage 6 miles out of towm and now it kinda hurts...
