I am looking at a 2005 Ranger XLT 4X4 with 140,000 mile for. This truck would not be for daily driving, but rather primarily for off roading & fun. Does the high miles scare anybody and are there parts that would typically start to go out at this age?

140k? Pshaw! You're just getting broke in good! I'll roll 235k in a day or two and still running like a top. Do not fear the mileage, Grasshopper!

No one can say what things will definitely happen to you, but I will share my experiences. When my 2000 3.0 5 speed reached over 150,000, I replaced a few things. They were: alternator, water pump, cam position sensor, Idler pulley and heater coil. These things I did myself w/ the help of this site and the cost was little compared to shop fees. The truck has not been abused and presently is running flawlessly. It is an easy vehicle to work on compared to others I've owned. I will not mention those other brands here. They can thank me later. I have also enjoyed doing upgrades such as; Hurst floor shifter, gauge cluster swap to add the tachometer and an explorer overhead console. I would consider that mileage a non issue on these trucks. Go for it!

If the truck has been well maintained, you shouldn't have a problem. I just sold a 2000 3.0L 5 speed 2wd with 163K. I'd owned it since 71K. Full synthetic oil every 5,000 miles. Only major repairs, fixed a broken ball joint, and replaced the clutch at 152K, due to a bad throwout bearing. One of the best rides I have ever owned. Would still be driving it if I hadn't been jonesing for another Bronco 2. On the other hand, a neighbor just blew the 2nd 3.0L in his 99 Ranger. Runs the dogcrap out of it and doesn't fix anything until it quits running. Needless to say, you don't want to by a vehicle from him!
