there are buttons that hold the interior panels in place instead of screws. what are they called and what is the tool that pops them out?

Christmas tree clips? And its called a trim tool

I have a set of pliers with a bend in them that works just as well...sorta like the one shown here...

They are a bit more versatile than the trim tools unless you plan on doing a lot of trim work...these pliers have saved my a$$ a few times with hard to reach places...

The plastic plugs are also readily available at auto parts stores...I've replaced all of mine...also used them to apply some insulation under the hood...

Some of the those clips that Ford used can be very hard to remove even with the correct tool. Don't feel bad if the heads pull off the clips when you try to remove them. Just have some replacement clips around. The hardest ones to remove go into white plastic inserts. Sometimes I found it easier to cut the heads off the clips to push the center forward and out of the white inserts. I did this because many times I was working on new Rangers and I didn't want to damage the panels getting the chips out. The clips were made for just a one time use, you can reuse the clips, they just don't hold as tight if reused.
