ok that same 92 ranger thats been giving me probs. i think I fixed the timing. It was running better but still nasty rough in low rpms too. So i decide to change the fuel filter(after a trip to teh E.R. for gas spilling all over me, eyes and ears) well I get the filter changed and the old filter spews out a crapload of carbon deposits as the fuel drains out. It did this last time when I used carb cleaner on it till i could get a new filter. Well it was running Ok for the circumstances and then halfway to work it died and the more gas i gave it the faster the rpms dropped.? When idling and i had the timing wrong it would sometimes do this so i adjusted the timing, But going down teh road I didnt have any pops or snaps or anything. It jsut started dying, I sat for a minute it restarted and i drove another mile then it did it again and wouldnt start.????????????????????? IM SO CONFUSED:annoyed:

I concur...my truck did the exact same thing before it became a total no-start.

My fuel pump would engage, too...but dad still replaced it after finding nothing else wrong.

If your fuel pump is the culprit, I just say "do what I did" and buy a bottle of Lucas injector cleaner as well.

After the truck started running, it sounded NASTY...wouldn't go up hills hardly at all, etc...I just knew it was destined to be a "take the trash to the dump" truck.

After putting in the Lucas and running it for about a week...it's back to it's old self...actually, better, I think, than when we bought it...and that was 12 years ago.

NEW UPDATE, SO WHEN I WAS OWRKING TO GET THE MOTOR RIGHT THE GAUGE WENT TO EMPTY, SO I TOOK MY GAS CAN AND TRIED TO ADD SOME GAS. WHEN IT OVERFLOWED, I ASSUMED IT WAS FULL AND THE GAUGE WAS BROKE. WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO THE GAUGE WORKS FINE AND I HAD SOME BLOCKAGE IN THE FILLER NECK AND WHEN IT DIED IT WAS OUT OF GAS. i JSUT DIDNT CHECK IT BECUASE OF THE OVERFLOW THING, NOW IT RUNS AGAIN STILL LIKE CRAP BUT RUNS. SPUTTERING IN LOW RPM'S AND SOME POPPING IN HIGH RPMS. AND NOT ENOUGH POWER TO HIT REDLINE IN ANY GEAR. i GUESS ILL KEEP WORKING ON IT.

How are you adjusting ignition timing? The 92's have distributor-less ignition systems that have non-adjustable timing. You just plug in the computer, coils, and DIS module and it either runs perfectly (if all you're parts are good) or doesn't run right (any or all of the above mentioned parts are bad). There is no adjusting the timing. Please explain what you've done and maybe we can help you get it running right again.

Even DIS can be adjusted, Not the electronic side, but the valve timing. What I was adjust was the cam to crank positon. I figured if my timing was a tooth off (especially since this was a non contact motor) thenI would have what appeared to be firing issues. When in reality my exhaust valve was closing too soon and exhausting through intake(reference intake backfire) Everything seems to be fixed now except for low rpm stutter and low power, and some bad fuel mileage, which could possibly be attributed to hosing down teh egr valve with carb cleaner.....:annoyed: but either way it goes.

OH also the way my truck died when i ran out of fuel it also dies like that every once in while now if i hit a big bump or stop completely without downshifting. then i have to sit in neutral for a minute before it will restart.(5 spd) One time I had to tap the plug on top of the fuel pump (bed is still off for this exact reason)

Oh you mean cam timing. That makes more sense :icon_twisted:

Yeah a good trick is to take a string and stretch it taught between the center of the cam sprocket and the oil pump sprocket. The timing mark on the cam sprocket should fall along the line created by the string. That will put it in factory cam timing.

As for your other issues, it sounds like a fuel pump issue. I would also check both ignition coils, ICM, and all associated wiring. You can get the coils and IDM at some junkyards pretty cheap if yours turn up bad. Ford used the same 4 plug coils on alot of the 4.6s before they went coil on plug so finding them in a junk yard is usually pretty easy.

I didnt know about the coil interchange, might be worth it. ICM and IDM--ignition control module and ignition diagnostic monitor? I have obd1 codes 98 and 18 electronic pressure control circuit failure and ignition diagnostic monitor circuit failure.....

The ignition code is definately a coil, ICM (ignition control module), or wiring issue. When the computer loses IDM it defaults to locked 10 BTDC ignition timing. Get rid of that IDM code and she'll run a lot better!

If the truck is in rough shape, don't disregard the advice about checking the wiring, I know I found a few broken wires on my '90.

I am not familiar with the other code so I won't try to offer advice.

good point about the wiring, it would be stupid to disregard that ill check it. i have tranny issues now namely stuck in first gear, read the transmissions section for that one.
