Building a rally car. Opinions wanted.

Didn't get much done tonight but I got a list queued up for tomorrow. Cut off a little nubbins on the trans, got the new trans mount in and messed with the motor mounts a little more.

New mount looks way less ratchet out than the old one. And my local NAPA had it in stock!

Cut a little tab off the back of the bell housing, it was interfering with setting the trans in place so off it went.

And we cut down the motor mount where it was interfering with the starter, I got a little over zealous and cut where the crossmember bolts to the frame so I'm going to get some angle iron and see how bad my welding skills have gotten.

The is the final look, going to take only the puck and cage off the other mount since it doesn't look like it'll be in the way.

More to come tomorrow!

Mike's welding skills as promised:

First and second welds after some number of years.

And how it ended up. That pretty looking weld from earlier wasn't as structural as hoped so it was redone.

Id be practicing alot more b4 continuing....

That looks like wire speed was way too fast. Or its too cold. Plus the material doesnt look too clean. Flux cores more forgiving with rust and dirt mig you need to grind that all clean

Yeah, the motor mounts will be farmed out to an actual welder. This was just a capped brace over the leftover mount. Since the main structure is still in tact I decided to take a stab at it but the cage and mounts will see the talents of a trained professional.

Thanks for the tips Kris.

Kenny and I Got some more stuff done today.

First and foremost, all is right in the shop again. The old Sansui had some issues a while back, so I dropped it off at a local sound shop to see if it could be fixed. In the interim I hooked up my Kenwood stereo and it looked like this.

Not only did it look like crap it didn't feel right. Considering Dad had that stereo for over 40 years and it's been the only shop stereo I can remember, I'm glad to announce it's all fixed up and back!

Finished up with the new trans mount and set it back into place. We tried to move it farther back on the mount to gain more engine room but it appears we are at maximum driveshaft penetration (gigity)

We also cut the shifter hole and the boot (sorta) fits. We just need to solve the shifter itself issue.

Here's the state the engine bay is in now, looks familiar.

And here's the car. Swept out the shop and it's finally warm enough to work with the doors open. Feels good man.

Didn't get a whole heck of a lot done tonight. Hacked and ground off my nasty weld and cut the mount down a little further. I'm concerned about starter clearance. The new bracing will be handled by our on call professional.

We've been working on some side projects the last couple days. Mike has been playing with his bike and I've been playing with this. Hood pins and patina'd hood on my daily beater

Ben speaks the truth, finally got the bike running nice and the new tail light functional. The mod looks the way I wanted it too since the beginning.

Regular programming will resume soon. We have a deadline now! We have a real car club up here now so we are working to enter it in a cruise event in early July. Stay tuned!

So we got back to it and got the engine ready for mounts. We did our mockup and realized some things need to be clearance out. Here are some pics in no real order. The real work begins this weekend.
