Build Thread - 1-ton Chevy Swap

Lookin good man. Are you using the ballistic flex joints? Did you happen to buy the wrench for them as well?

Also, you going to be around this week, maybe tomorrow or thursday? I need to bend one tube about 20 more degrees.

Thanks, neal.

I did quite a bit of research on this on several forums and other internet based sources. I also looked at a few texts that I had from back in school. After all that, I asked the guys at my welding supply store what they would do. It seemed to corroborate what I had researched. I heated the housing with a torch, you want to aim for between 120-450°C. I used this Copper-Tin alloy (ECuSn-A) rod:http://aeriform.com/browse/product.aspx?Msg=RecID&recIds=18280&WT.svl=18280

Ideally, you want it to cool slowly, but you can do that similarly by reheating it to a lower temperature several times. I've also read that you can just leave it to cool down after welding.

Sweet thanks for the info :icon_cheers: I think i will do some shaving when i get my 14 bolt rear as well...

lookin good so far john. hopefully most of us will have our shit done by next spring/summer so we can plan a wheelin trip.

I have been out of town for a bit and have also been extremely busy with other projects, so here is a little update:

Tie-rod, yes I hang stuff from a tree for painting....

Driver side upper and lower links hanging in the garage to dry:

Frame end track bar mount, I left a can of primer sitting on the truck, and my girlfriend left me a surprise....

Axle end track bar mount. It's missing the axial brace tube section as well as some additional material around the mounting area:

Looks like its all coming together. Thats a nice note that your gf left ya. Made me laugh.

Everybody all at once.......AWWWWWWWWWWW!!!

Lol, Looks really goos man

It's 1/8" wt tube. Today I plated the sides with another 1/8" before welding it to the axle tube. I would have liked to find some 2.25" x.25" wt tube, but figured plating the sides would suffice as long as there was an good axial brace in there too. :dntknw: We shall see....

...Bolted up the shackle flip kit from ORD, shackles and springs (for some reason, I still have multiple exhaust hangers from various different setups that I'd had on there over the years...)
...:icon_rofl:..story of my life....

Looks really good, i like seeing some other builds on here besides just RBV's

x1.000

Thanks Pato!!

Update 9-8-2008
Everything's welded to the axle and started priming the bare metal surfaces. I'm waiting until final assembly to bolt up the tie rod/drag link/track bar, etc.

I picked up a hydraulic cylinder for the steering assist:

And the aluminum oil pan to replace the rusty stamped steel OEM.

I still have to add the tube clamp on the tie rod for the cylinder mount, as well as the other tab on the differential cover. They should be here next week sometime.

Loving the level of skill/quality/attention to detail/patience on this build.

any particular reason you went with a single ram acting ram instead of a double acting ram? Cost?

Also, is there any plan for the appearance of this truck once your built? or just a nice coat of trail rash...
