Was talking with a buddy. He doesn't make alot of money has like 500 a month he can put into the truck. If that. But he has a 92 4.0 5 speed 4x4 was asking me what he should do in what order. I said a locker first. Lunchbox style. Then a little bigger tires. 33/32s. Then some lift of a flexy kind. Then a proper regear for the tire size he wants.

He then asked why not tires first. I said I've seen a locked truck on 31s go where a limited slip on 36s would not.

Any other advise? He says he wants to trim like 2 inches off the fender and put flex flares on.

I have less than that a month left over to put into my truck, I have done the tires, lift, and doing the locker this month or next. Personally, I would do the lift forst since it gives you the biggest change in looks next to tires, but tires will be way more expensive than a lift for a 92 like 500 bucks vs a grand for tires. Then look into either the tires or the locker and regear at the same time. Both tires and locker/gears should be about the same cost wise more or less and will require him to save up a few months. Lift will be quiker gratification for his first mod and will be functional :icon_thumby: If he wants to wait i'd do the locker/regear first since it will be the more functional with his current tires vs big tires that rub and his truck struggles to turn without the gears and the locker well might as well do it all at once since your gonna have it out.

Buy all the parts/tires he is going to need a little at a time and then put it all on at once. Is he doing the lift himself or taking it to a shop? After the lift he is going to need an alignment and that is another cost he will have to cough up. When the tires are installed he can do the alignment right at the shop. With taller tires he is going to have to re-gear the truck. Not cheap as we all know.

Yup, that's why i had mentioned if he wanted to do something asap to feel like he is making progress I would lift it. But who is doing the work is a good question. If you take it to a shop your probably going to pay about as much if not more than the lift kit itself in labor.

1. What's his base truck?
2. What's his fab skill and tool availability?
3. Have any good "Pull A Part" type junkyards around?
4. What's his overalll goal of the truck? Trail only? Mud? Daily Driver Capable?

Those 4 questions are the basis of every budget build IMO
What axles does he have now? If they are not worth putting money into, I'd start with Junkyard axles (8.8 and d35, if it's a RBV). Go ahead and be building the axles (gears are expensive....)

edit for add in: Wheel it stock! Take the easier trails. I had a blast getting out on fireroads and stuff in my stock B2 before I started building it.

Our buddy's dad used to work at a dealership and has every tool you could/would ever need. My buddys got amazing Fab work and has done several sets of gears so the work itself is not a problem its just cash flow. My buddy offers him a Dana 30 with 410 and limited slip in trade of mowing his acre lawn lmao. Said he would put in it too

The pull and save is a few hours away. Justin ussualley makes a list and trays to go twice a year. Which is coming up. He wants to DD the truck. Wants a nice looking truck that can do most trails and get him places a stock truck wouldn't. Told me that it doesn't have to go everywhere. Getting stuck is part of the fun and hell just get a winch

Check out the d30 builds on here. It can be done.
Make the arms yourself for a couple hundred bucks vs $500
XJ or EB coils.

There's lots of builds in here with them.

Last night he said he really wants to do some snow wheeling this winter. So I told him to hold off on the locker his l/s will do just fine. Idk that he's capable of saving money lol

I had advised him to take the d30. Our friend just happens to be a. Jeep xj maniac and has like 4 spare jeeps just for parts. Even has one of those rare Turbo diesel jeeps. I'm sure he has an extra set of extended arms he built
