That would explain why they didn't put it in AWD Explorers, F-150's and Broncos. Even the 4.2 was picked over the 4.0 for the F-150's.
Pushrod 4.0's are in the neighborhood of the bottom of the barrel 302's, the "smog specials" of the 70's and 80's. They are also the most common (in my area) to buy. But even those with you can easily build them up to blow a 4.0 away.
I love my cherokee. For an offroad rig i'd take it over a B2 anyday with the same amount of cash invested in it. It was cheap and quick to build and has been unstoppable for me offroad so far. Don't get me wrong though my heart is with RBVs all the way though, wouldnt trade my ranger for any jeep any day. The XJ was just the practical choice for a capable and economic trail rig
