I have a 1990 Ford Bronco2 that shuts off for no reason (No fire), It will start back up in a few minutes. I have replaced the computer, spark plug wires and have checked all electrical connections and grounds. Any other Ideas?

This is........ Report site problems area !!!

No repair help here.

Not sure if you've got one or not? But it sounds like the TFI on the disty is going due southhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

If it overheats it shuts down....let it cool a bit? and it will restart with ease.

How is this a problem with the site?

I get how it's a problem with your vehicle, but your vehicle isn't the website.

I am assuming the '90 model year still has a distributor here, but if it does....check the pickup inside the distributor. My 86 was doing the exact same thing....running fine, then suddenly shutting off. wait anywhere from five to 30 minutes and it would fire right back up, no problem. I changed the TFI...no change. Checked/changed coil, plugs, wires, etc.....no change. Not until I changed the dizzy pickup did the problem go away, never to be seen again.

If you are going to start swapping parts, change the pickup first. It's cheaper.

Maybe one of the moderators would be nice this Christmas and put this thread in its proper location??

The 2.9 changed very little during it's run. The biggest change was the deletion of the EGR system in 88.

All 2.9s have distributors, all have TFI's, and all have pickups, with the exception of the still-produced DOCH Cosworth model.

Also, the TFI, pickup, and ignition coil are meant to be changed as a set since excessive amperage draw from any one worn component (usually the coil) has the potential to fry the other two new units just like it did the old one.

Good to know. I thought they did but wasn't positive. Years ago I had an 89, but never worked on it like I do my '86.

Good thing I had changed all of mine. Coil first, then TFI, then the pickup. All within about 200 miles of each other. Not intentionally, mind you...and definitely not good mechanical troubleshooting.

For the purposes of this thread, perhaps the OP should change the pickup and see if it solves his problem. If it does, change out the remaining components so the set is new?
