I have a cracked block on my 91 3.0 ranger. I think Im gonna attempt to change it out with a rebuild from O'Reily. Are there any posts with someone who has done this before in the archive that anyone knows about? It would be a great help especially if they have a step by step with pictures. Has anyone ever bought a rebuild from O'Reily before? Is it recommended? Thanks for yalls help in advance.

Mechanically speaking the replacement of an engine is far less involved than most people think. The two worst parts are getting the trans mated back up (I highly recommend just taking the trans out and then putting it back in after the new engine is set in the truck) and getting all the plugs back in the right place. I find a roll of masking tape and a sharpie help a lot with that.

I have not used an O'Reily reman unit. I'd got with a Jasper if I had the option.

Jasper 3.0 engines are $2500- I just looked them up half an hour ago.

My engine is out on the floor of my garage awaiting new heads. I'm thinking about going with the parts store heads, but haven't decided for sure.

The engine swap, as stated, is surprisingly not that complex. On my '94 there were two main harnesses that I unplugged at the firewall and the engine harness remained with the motor. There's also the alternator harness which comes from the fender across the front of the motor- that one stays on the truck.

Good luck with everything.

I think I can actually have my engine out faster than I can have my transmission out if I choose to leave the transmission in.

Again, I do not recommend leaving the trans in because it makes putting the whole thing back together harder. If anything, take the engine out now, order your new one, and then get the trans on the floor while you wait for the engine to show up.

Agreed.

Thank you both. Hey freshmeat, I live in Walker. What happened to your engine? My buddy's got a 94 4.0 with over 500K.

That's good stuff! I'm right next door in Denham Springs.

My engine was running great. Can't remember the mileage- haven't driven the truck in over three years. I went to swap the exhaust manifold gaskets and snapped three bolts in the heads. Pulled the motor to get them all fixed up and broke an exhaust flange on one head and snapped the bolt extractor in the other. Called it quits and bought a loaded 4x4 2005 F150. Lots of buying/selling since then. I have my "build" thread linked in my sig if you really care to get bored with sentimental ramblings about the truck.

I recently decided I'm going to go through it and get it right. I had parked it three years ago with no real intentions of finishing, but lately I've been wishing I still had it running.

Man what a bummer. Thats why I hate workin on vehicles. I think I understand about "sentimental". I would hate to give up on this truck. I also got a 01 Cherokee with a bad trans I havent given up on yet. 2500.00 for a trans fixed on Cherokee. Found this Ranger for 2000.00. Both have great reputation and cant stand to give up on either. I'll have to do something though. The drive way is gettin crowded.

cherokee

No, its a 2wd sport, black......where can I the casting number on my block for that ranger?

Me, too!! I always pull the trans along with a motor. So easy!! Put it back the same way. What a breeze!!!!
