Hello, can anyone suggest a type or brand of shocks that are good for a ranger xl, 4cly manual long bed. I am not sure if I just get the best price or go for a specific type. thanks.

Well, I can definitely tell you that I Do Not recommend the Monroe "Monro-Matic Plus" shocks. Way to squishy even when brand new.

When I update my suspension here in the next 6 months I'll be going with Bilstein or Ranchos.

I personally have no problems with Monro shocks. But some brand options will give a softer ride...and some will naturally give a harsh ride.

Basic of a shock is to reduce the spring rebound. A "Squishy" shock=softer ride and will tend to rebound a few more times to dampen the spring action.

You can use online reviews for different brands. Like I said. No problem with Monro products. Had good luck with them for many years. I'm also sure Rancho's and Bilsteins are also high quality. Just never installed them as the shop I worked out of did mostly MonroMatic brands.

The stiffer the shock the harsher the ride, it takes a bigger bump to move them. I have a 2WD 02 with standard shocks and it rides almost like a car. I have an 08 FX4 with all the level II options and it rides really harsh. You can feel every seam or rock in the road (and I mean every one of them). And a shock will not increase the load carrying ability of the truck (well, air shocks can).

I believe all brands that have been in business for a long time makes a pretty good product; they are still here. And I would think the house-brand shocks from the Autozone type stores with the life-time warranties would be a pretty good product. Otherwise they would be giving a lot to them away.

Your truck, figure out how you want to use it and spend your dime(s).

Well, aren't those the cheapest shock they offer????:icon_confused: u get what u pay for......I've always used their top of the line available, and have been pretty happy with them! I currently have the Oem spectrums on the ranger , maybe 3k on them and are holding up rather well.... I have a 4x4 with a 2in suspension lift and 10ply Bfgs' the ride is noticeably better than Oem..... :headbang:

If your stumped, try taking a look on rockauto. Try categorize their shocks based of use. Like economic, utility, towing, lift, etc.

I may be grabbing some rancho steering dampeners in the near future. Or Moog. Try also make shock absorbers as well. Good brands, cheap too.

Bilstein are fantastic and the have great options available, they are exspensive, but the ride is amazing, and they last for a long time

go to sears and get theirs if still offered or the monroes they carry. I put some on about 10 years ago still working fine no leaks. They are also lifetime guaranteed by sears or were. If not a hard working vehicle no need for real hard working level shock just something that will help smooth out the ride. If ya think you will need some HD type occasionally they make a coil spring overload or used to.
