My credo
it is what it is
alright i have a question about the front brake rotors on my 91 4.0l 4wd 5 speed ranger. apparently there are 2 different rotors for the front end. 1 the deck height is 2.2" and the other is 2.5", also, there is a double lipped rotor as well. does anybody know off hand which rotor would be the right size? the front end is auto hubs as well if that makes a difference.

For a 4x4 Ranger with a D35 TTB, there should only be one rotor/hub option.

Are you talking about the 4 wheel ABS vs. the non-ABS options?

IIRC in '91, they only had 2wd rear ABS.

I bought cross-drilled & slotted rotors on mine about 3 years ago from an online source.

I just checked the Rockauto website and it looks like there might have been a switch from 2.2" to 2.5" during the `91 model year.

dana 18 to 35? i know when i have gone to the auto store and got stuff for my 97. they have tried to give me old dana 28 crap

it ended up being 2.5". thanks yall

91 is d28 i believe unless it has been swapped to d35

4.0's have always been the 35, especially by that time frame. A couple with lesser engines got a hybrid, presumably to use up left over parts or something. But the outer knuckles are still D35.

From what I've gathered... with the 91 model year...

Some 4-cyl have been claimed to have come stock with a D-35, but presumably most got the D-28 up until 93, but information is sketchy on those.

3.0L motor trucks got the D-28/35 hybrid up until 95ish, IIRC. The hybrid uses D-35 everything except for the guts in the pumpkin and the inner axle shafts.

4.0L motor trucks were all D-35.

There's nothing sketchy about it...

All '91 & '92 model trucks came with the D35 regardless of engine. The hybrid D28/35 thing was not produced by Dana until the '93 models came out.

1990 is the only year where the question of a D28 or D35 should ever come up regarding brake or other axle-end parts, as even the later "hybrid" axles are all D35 outside of the differential housing. For whatever reason the dummies who run the parts lookup systems for auto parts stores can't seem to find a clue on it, so is why confusion like this persists.
