brake problems

I own a 96-ford ranger, and just recently noticed the ABS and brake lights appearing in my dash, then a few days later I noticed my brakes becoming looser. It seemed to me like the pressure was gone when I slammed the brakes. It became harder to stop and it sometimes wouldn’t. So I immediately went to auto zone to buy more break fluid and the guy told me to check behind the tires for leaks. So I checked, and everything seemed to fin and not be wet (im still a beginner, so I might be looking at the wrong thing). Im not sure what to do from here, this is my first truck, so im not sure how things work on American made trucks yet. So recently iv just been adding more brake fluid to keep my brakes working and to stop the lights from flashing in my dash. Can anyone help me out? What might the problem be? And are their any tutorials to help me fix it on my own?

Usually when you get the brake light on and you dont have any leaks its time for new pads in the front and possible the rear as well. The reason you get the light is it is taking more fluid to push the pads in contact with the rotor. By adding more brake fluid you are just getting rid of the dummy light and not fixing the real issue. I would check your front pads!
