Brake Pad Spitting Off

Hey i have a 1986 ranger xlt 4x4. I am the new owner of the vehicle and the front brakes were making some noise so i decided to do some work to them. Once i removed the wheels I realized that on the drivers side the outer pad was completely missing. I totally replaced on both sides new calipers, new rotors, and new pads. I drove it around for most the day untill all of a sudden the pedal went to the floor and i heard a noise from the wheel. I got home and realized that the driver side pad had once again been spit out from the caliper. Im curious on what could cause this problem? I was unable to retrieve the pad that i lost. Could this be from an air bubble inside the brake system? Or could it also be a problem with the master cylinder or proportioning valve? I just found it strange that it was the driver side again. Any info will help. Thank you! :icon_thumby:

Ha mine did the same thing after some wheeling. Pedal went to the floor at a light but then it was fine again. I actually drove it 2 days before i realized what happened...:dunno: Ate up the rotor a little but it'll be fiiine. Driver's side outer pad. I don't know why or how it happened...but it damn sure did. Put new pads on and it's been fine.

are the wheel bearings sloppy?

how do i check if wheel bearings are sloppy? i replaced the outer bearing on both sides as well and packed grease in there

jack the truck off the ground, put a prybar under the tire and pry upwards, there should be no play...

i've NEVER heard of this happening before, and it's scary as hell to think that it could... can you provide pics of the setup, and any scratches, scrapes or any other damage?

that's weird as hell being that it's all brand new parts!

Ya, I mean it's attached in good at the rotor to hub right? I can't picture play if so. With new pads caliper and rotors, your guess is as good as mine with it possibly being the brakes lines but then how the he'll does it spit out the pad because of the lines... I'd figure it would just lock up or not squeeze that side... Idk... This is just a guess from a guy going to school for networking HaHa...

Possibly a misaligned caliper? Or it comes loose somewhat from threads during braking?

this is really the only thing i can think...

it is not an airbubble that caused it, it is not the lines that caused it, and it is not the master cylinder that caused it...

i'm 99% sure your problem is local to the hub area

i attached some pics.

I have a little bit of knowledge in braking systems but not some much on what to look for when it comes to the hub

that looks like there's something missing from it... caliper wise... possibly the frame that it mounts to? i don't know exactly...

on mine (which is much newer) i've got a huge bracket that the pads mount to, then the caliper slides on over top of that

there are 2 nubs on the back of the pad that fit into corresponding holes on the caliper. the large spring fingers are supposed to hold the pad tightly into those holes. if they are not installed securely into those holes the pad can move around. its hard to tell from the pictures but it looks like they are seated ok.

are you SURE they wheel bearings aren't sloppy?

The pads are installed correctly to my knowledge as well as how you described it. I put the tired on and shoved my breaker bar under the tire( i dont have prybar) and pushed up on the tired and no play. i used my arms and all my weight to try and move it but there seems to be no play at all.

Could this have something to do with the hub lockers?

Main problem up here with just the pad coming off the backing plate is that salt shit every county seems to be spraying on the roads in winter. You have no idea how many we've seen come into our shop like that.

I drove the ranger around all day today and hadn't experienced any problems or noises what so ever. Keeping my fingers crossed!
