Hey everyone. I have a problem that I can't figure out, so I thought I'd ask on here.

Okay. When you press your brake pedal, the brake lights usually go on as soon as that pedal moves downward, right?

Well, my brake lights do go on, but it is too late. The brake lights in my truck go on when my foot is 1/4 of the way down. I can slow down normally to make a turn or whatever and my brake lights don't even go on. I am afraid that someone will rear end me because my brake lights aren't going on.

I went to my local parts store, and fourtunately there was a Ford Ranger owner who worked there. He told me about a little switch a little bit further up the petal that controlled the lights. I fiddled around with it and no matter where i moved the switch, the petal travel for the brake lights to go on was the same.

I need some help! Anyone have the same problem?

Thanks!

Replace your brake light switch, the contact points inside are "burned"
you are experiencing the first symptom that it's on it's way out.

Thanks....Any idea how much that would cost? Something a 16 year old could do?

Yes you can do it, just a matter of minutes(if even).
From memory, im thinking switches cost in the 5 to 10$ range, but i may be way off. Check autozone.com

Locate the switch by starting at the brake pedal and running up the shaft until you see a tab coming off the left side. There should be a switch contacting the tab that comes from a small, tan box just on the aft side of the tab. Rotate the switch box a quarter turn and you should be able to remove the box by pulling it back from its metal support. Now it should be hanging by a group of wires. The top end with the wires coming out is the section the replacement switch plugs into.

Uhhhh... No.

the switch on a 1994 is mounted on the pin on the
side of the brake pedal, it is coaxially mounted to the
loop on the end of the brake booster pushrod.

It looks like what it is, a cheap bent sheet metal thing
with what essentially ammounts to a microswitch burried
inside, that ford has been using since the 1970's (or possibly earlier)

with only minor (near insignificant changes)

Mine lasted for 392,000 miles.

The new one I just put in will certainly last much longer.
Because on my truck that switch no longer turns on the lamps.
It powers two electro mechanical relays and a solid-state relay.
It also turns OFF another solid state relay.

The two electro-mechanical relays power the left and right tail lamps respectively, one solid state relay is inside my trailer brake controller
the other one that it turns off is inside the amplifier(brain) for my
cruise control.

So everythingm on my brale light switch combined adds up to about
half what a 184 marker lamp bulb draws, I expect that switch to last a long, long time.

NAPA P/N ECHSL238 $13.29

It's called a Stoplamp switch.

There is a hairpin clip that holds the pedal pushrod and the switch to the pin on the brake pedal.

The only tool you really need is a pair of needle nose pliers (or a leatherman tool) because it's kinda difficult to get a grip on the "loop" on the end of the pin.

something slender and pointy is usually handy to pry up the connector latch where the two wire plug goes onto the switch

I got my replacement switch by wandering around the U-pull-it junkyard pulling
switches until i found a ford with a new switch in it, I only pulled seven or eight
to find two that looked brand new and that took me less than 15min including
the walking.

Thanks, I got the part and fixed the problem. Turns out that AllanD was right. Switch was on its way out. $7.99 @ Autozone. You could breathe on the pedal and the lights go on. haha
