Brake Dust Shield - See Link

Hey guys,

Can I run without the item marked as "12" in the LMC Catalog:

I disassembled, cleaned, painted my front suspension and they were rusted to h*ll. Same with the rotor / dust covers. Those puppies are $37 each so I'll only replace them if I have to.

Those are a lot cheaper at a junkyard.

They cover up the rotor's wheel bearing seal, so I'd expect increased entry of dirt and especially rain, slush and salt into the wheel bearings with that thing missing.

I don't have them on mine... no problems after almost 4 years.

If you want to get new ones though, I agree, junkyard (get 'em off the latest truck that fits).

Yeah the only problem is it's the rust belt here so probably after pulling all the crap off a JY axle they'd be rusted too. Mine actually looked fine until I hit them with a wire wheel.

I'll leave them off for now and put em on before winter. Thanks guys.

No problems here... I haven't had them on for the past few months.

Regardless, you need to check and repack your bearings once a year.

Either the guy that had the truck before i bought it took them off or my truck didn't come with them because i just had my front end apart and dont recall taking that part off when i replaced an axle and front bearings. i do have a shield that is held on by 3 little bolts.

Yeah, there's an inner dust shield that goes between the knuckle and spindle, and overlaps the inside of the brake rotor (I think it is mainly to keep grass, weeds, etc from wrapping around the spindle, between the rotor and knuckle and getting in to the bearing seal area) and an outer dust shield that is just bigger than the rotor. It also catches air from the front to help cool the rotor.

I did not see that part number 12 on my truck. I dont have the large splash guard either.

i dont have either of those guards an ive had my truck for the past 3 years.. been pretty good with out them.

That part does not exist on either of my trucks. I've had one truck for twelve years and the other for five so I would say it's not a terribly important omission.

You won't miss them. All they did on mine was trap mud and drool between the rotor and the inner seal until it hardened into a brick. I pulled them years ago and haven,t had a problem.

Those shields were only used on ALL D35s from introduction in 1990 through
the end of 1992.

The '93 Explorers didn't get them because the ABS tone ring occupies that space

And FWIW those damned things do a far better job of keeping debris IN than
they do at keeping it OUT.

I STRONGLY recommend discarding them.

I swear my Dana 28 had them. When I took the spindle off they came off in pieces...

I don't have them anymore, nor do I have the shields that go behind the front rotors.

Same deal as mine. They came off in pieces.

Guess the consensus is to leave them off. Fine with me!!
