When I push down on the brakes, I'm hearing a "groaning" sort of noise from inside the cabin. As I push harder it makes more noise and sometimes does it as I let up on the pedal as well. Sounds like the rod is dragging the firewall or something. It has been doing this intermittently for about a year. When it first started doing this I looked under the dash and didn't see anything amiss, so figured I'd worry about it later. Now it is getting a lot worse. Could this be the booster going out? It doesn't make noise as long as the pedal is held in one place. I figured I ask before I took it apart as maybe someone else on here has experienced the same goofy thing.

It sounds more to me like the bushing between the booster and the pedal. You might try greasing it.
