I have an 86 ranger ext cab. I just rebuilt the driveshaft and took the truck for a test drive. The rear wheels were still making moise. I put the truck back on the jack to check the rear brakes out. I thought that I was going to see wasted shoes and drums. To my suprise the brakes were in good shape. I took them apart, cleaned and greased everything. After the first wheel was done I went to the second side. I noticed the the spring on the brake return bar was broken. I went to all my local parts houses to find the "correct" spring. I tought napa had the correct spring until I got home and found out the spring was too big. My friend has an 88 ext can and I am going to take the rear springs and rear end out and put them in my truck so I donr wantto spend money on the old brakes. Does anyone know what the brakes that I have on my truck now are?

pics or gtfo. this doesn't make a lot of sense.

brake return bar? the only thing i can translate this to is a parking brake strut

I'm guessing he means the spring that goes on the end of this:

There are 9" and 10" drum brakes on rangers, not sure if that makes a difference in the hardware kits tho.

the thing you are holding in your hand is the parking brake strut, exactly what i said, we can only assume this is what the OP meant.

OP-its not a "return" at all. just a fulcrum for the parking brake.

it comes in a brake hardware kit

That is what I was talking about. The one I have is not offset at the ends it is straight. The spring in the kit as well as the one in picture 2 is tool big.

i don't think the one in the picture is from a ranger, the hub has 6 studs.

you will have to take it back to the parts store and tell them what size drums you have.

Yea, i just grabbed the picture from google, it's not a ranger.
