Brain farts with v8 swap

I have a 98 3.0 2wd ranger I want to convert to a 302. I have found 1986 5.0 with the sefi system and an aod transmission. My issues aren't as much frankensteining the ECM and gem module together, I'm worried about the speedometer, tach and how I'm going to select gears. And show the driver which gear the truck is in, i first though about aftermarket gauges, gear position indicator, and a steering column from an auto ranger, but that will be over a grand. Can I put a floor selector in like from a b2? Will the column selector work with the aod? How can I retain my speedo, since the original is wire driven... I believe...

On a side note, can I get the electrical diagrams for a 1986 5.0 mercury cougar?

Can some one help me with getting the diagrams for the 86 ecm controls.

I have one of these shifters in mine, I think they fit just about anything (I know AOD was mentioned in the instructions) It looks nice and works nice.

The RBV floor shifters are all solid linkage with a jackshaft, I don't know how much work it would take to get the dentents to line up with the trans.

I would ditch the '80s stuff and go for something newer for electrical. Explorer stuff is nearly plug and play for your year of truck and will net you more power. Later Mustang stuff is good too.

Ok, i was looking at that early wasnt sure if it would work, do you have a thread on the install or some pics. And im getting a decent deal on the 86 and plan to buil it up to 250-325 hp along with rebuilding the trans.

Take a look at my ranger swap, pretty straight forward, should have all your answers in the first post. You have the 3.slo, do you know if you have the return style fuel system or returnless?

I don't know if they have the specific diagrams you're looking for, but a great site anyway.
Good luck,

Richard

Great info so far thanks, ill run through it tomorrow and see how much i can get out of it.
Also does any one have any experience blueprinting motors.

The 98 speedometer is not dependent on the PCM and should work exactly as it did before the swap.

The 98 tachometer can be recalibrated from V6 to V8 by repinning a single ground wire at the connectors on the back of the cluster. Simply release the black/yellow wire from pin position 8 of the 10-pin connector and install it in position 16 of the 16-pin connector.

Thanks for that info. Im going to use a floor shifter to eliminate the need for a new steering column and gauge cluster, i want to get 300 hp out of the motor so im figuring a higher cam than the ho cam, higher compression, and higher flowing intake, heads and exhaust, just dont know what all i need to get their.

A fat wallet.

My phone wont let me qoute, im trying to figure out what i need, i know 200 is achieavble buly just a HO cam swap, so i was hoping just some port work and higher compression would lead to 300, im also trying to figure out how fat a wallet i need.

the 86 sefi blocks are a roller block correct, and what heads do i want on top?

If you are talking about the Explorer EFI stuff:

If you are talking about the shifter it was pretty easy to install, I have a few pics in my build thread. Most of my time was spent dicecting and trying to get a stock bezel to work with the shifter... which I did and I think it adds a little neatness to it.

They should be (my '87 was) Unless you change the pistons you will have piston to valve clearance issues with the stock flattop pistons. If neither the block or heads have been decked you should be able to get away with a HO cam and E7 heads (that is what I have on my engine) As far as something fancier (GT-40/p) I don't know. Check the clearance before you put it together for real.

Thanks for the info, I plan on having the block decked and honed as well as bored over .030, then ill have the pistons fly cut, I'm thinking either a b303 or e303 cam haven't decided, along with the cheap old gt-40 heads, not the new ones. I'm hoping that the combustion area will be around 59cc to give a higher compression. this is my first time building an engine, so if you have any input please go ahead and input

So im using a 2001 roller block and im going to pick up this custom ground cam i found on craigs. Thoughts? Yes? No? Suggestion? Possible issues? ImageUploadedByTapatalk1385615922.003125.jpg
