Box of Marbles 2000 Ford Ranger 2.5 174k miles

That would like piston slap. I would be a compression test and a leak down test

Rod knock. Double check the valve train to make sure it isn't the top end.
The motor is toast.

If it was a chev it wouldn't run at all...lol

Time to get an engine from a scrap yard and do a swap. Save any parts that look like they might be good for spares later on.

As I posted elsewhere, I think it is cam follower rattle caused by collapsed supports. Get the oil pressure up, and it may quiet down. I suggested changing to a light weight oil for the cold temps you are having... The oil flows from the top of the block(driver side rear) across a small passage on top of the block, machined into the bottom of the head, to flow around a head bolt then to a passage feeding the lifters and cam bearings. The passage around the head bolt might be too tight for thick oil to traverse readily, starving the lifters & cam bearings.
If the oil on the dipstick is like thick syrup, or thicker, it may not want to flow well until spring...
