I've been noticing this as a minor issue lately, but then this morning the truck didn't even want to budge until I stomped the gas. I also have been having an issue with a surging idle after rain storms. Perhaps I have some bad ignition components? Any ideas? They sort of sound like different problems to me. But I'm no expert.

Most times running badly after rain, is spark wires. A good tune up might get her back to shape.

Well I never did do a tune up since I bought it two years ago. Who knows when the last owner did one last.

I had the same problems due to MAF being busted and also the o2 sensors being busted on my mustang. Since it takes WOT to get power that means its an emissions issue. I would clean your MAF then if necessary replace your MAF, then if that dont work start looking at other things. O2,s TPS, EGR etc. anything emissions related. Also check for air leaks in your intake, any unmetered air going into the engine will give emissions codes because the actual air is different than the MAF readings. Sometimes it can be just a loose hose clamp on the intake tube. Or a vacuum line.

ya my buddies truck also did that and it was the maf because he never put the top of the airbox in the tabs. but a tune up wont hurt and try cleanin the maf too. a can of cleaner is cheap. if ur short on cash try that first. $4 can of spray vs $40-50 for plugs nd wires

I did clean the MAF a couple months back. I also replaced the Manifold Pressure Feedback Sensor, and I cleaned the IAC.

My 99 Ranger 4.0L had symptoms along those lines (intermittent sluggish throttle). It was the TPS and the computer did not throw a code. Just replaced it on a whim after reading up after a couple of late nights. I did the trick to make a long story short.

I did the tune up, and it doesn't seem to have helped. It's still sluggish unless I get past a certain spot on the throttle. I hate to keep throwing money at this thing.

You know I did notice that there is a piece snapped of my airbox near one of the screws. It's a about a nickle sized hole where you can see the filter. But I can't see that being an issue. It's still going through the filter, and it's being pulled in just like any other air. I imagine you are referring to the manifold intake itself, causing too much air to be sucked in somewhere.

That hole doesnt sound like aproblem. I recomend going to the junkyard and spending 25 dollars on a maf, housing, and pigtail. 'before' you spend ov er 50 on anything else.

The problem continues. The truck almost won't move unless I really stomp the pedal. Then it screeches and takes off. This makes for shitty driving to say the least. It goes away after it warms up. I want to take some of your advice, but I've gotten four different responses so it's still a complete crap shoot. It seems like it might cost less to have a shop diagnose the issue than it would to try two things and fail at both. So far I'm getting advice to replace the MAF, IAC, TPS, and O2 sensors.

This is what I have done regardless of this specific issue recently.

Cleaned MAF with MAF cleaner
Plugs and wires
New Fuel Pump
New Fuel Filter
New Manifold Pressure Feedback Snesor
New Air Filter
Cleaned IAC
Inspected Vacuum and Wiring

o2 sensors wont cause ur issue bro.. TPS or MAF is what i would chk into. u can ohm chk the TPS to see if it is workin or not..

my 98 ranger is doing the same thing. when the motor is cold it will almost
stop on a hill even with the pedle to the floor..the motor will be jerking
and spudder wont run over 1500 rpm. but when it warms up it seems to be
fine. i already replaced the coolent temp sensor.(the one with 2 wires)
it made no difference. so if anybody has this problem figured out please
let me know, the check engine light is never on ,if that helps.

have to agree with above, and the last description now makes it sound like dirty injectors.
