Does it look like that ? If so then no. at least i would think not.

I have several buddy's who have different types of beemers. None of the keys will work on another car. They are specifically designed for one vehicle only. If you found a beemer key it could possibly been dropped accidentally or it was involved in a crime. I would take it to a police station and make sure you do not have part of a crime scene evidence in your possession just to cover your ass.

At one point in time, those were dealer only keys. You have to have proof if ownership to have one ordered. I'm not sure of that's still the case.

My brother has a 2002 M3 and my Dad has a 2001 325i - and if you even think about getting something at the dealer, you better have a Visa Gold handy.

Sent while I should be doing something else

stray cat my boss has a wrecking yard and he crushed the beemer about a year ago so i was wondering if i could make money from it

They are different depending on the generation. Also each key has custom settings for that owner and includes a transponder that only matches up to that car. You can buy blanks and do some solder work, but if it is already cut then your SOL. Its a keepsake for the previous owner nothing more. You can possibly sell the internals to someone who wants to move his transponder to that key but you probably won't get much for it anyways.

My wife has a bimmer ask me how I know all this....

They still are dealer only but the cost is reduced if you get the blank yourself. Usually runs about 200 for a new key. Not sure if that includes the custom programing (like automatically roll down the windows or open the sunroof when unlocked)

In theory there is a method to reprogram the new key if u have a working key, but then there's the actual keycutting. But you could use it for emergencies to unlock the doors, that's about it.

My brothers key does all that sunroof stuff. Seems like it's got 4 or 5 buttons on it. It also rolls the windows down a little when you get in, because it goes into a channel or something. I don't recall if it rolls it down when you unlock it with the remote, or if it's when you pull up on the handle.

When you buy it you can program in special functions but if you hold the key in the unlock position for a few seconds it will open all the windows including the sunroof, standard feature since 1999. Crazy lol. Yea there was a little learning curve wrenching on it but in the end its just another car but with aluminum everything and lots and I mean LOTS of sensors for everything. Even the seats will detect if someone is sitting in it so it doesn't deploy the airbag if no one is there. Freaking a pain when tracking down problems. But there's a lot of helpful forums out there and a hell of a lot of how to's since shops charge an arm and a leg for labor. Parts ain't cheap either...

This is the one I'm referring to. The newer ones are rectangular and have silver buttons.

I guess as long as you have the proof the car was scraped I guess it would be ok. Some sates have different regulations on things. But, the key is not worth much since it will have to be reprogrammed and if somebody wanted to buy it they would have to worry about getting the dealer to set it up for them and then they will not have any warranty on it since it is used. They could buy a new one as I did for my Corvette and get a warranty.

My Brother's M3 is a trip to drive. It has the SMG manual trans, and no clutch pedal. When on a hill and you let off the brake, it rolls backwards until you hit the gas. You can also shift it on the console, or with the paddles on the steering wheel. IIRC, he said you can also just have it shift for you. And I'll tell you what, that little bastard will shit and get. It's a quick little bugger. It is DAMN AWFUL in snow.

I know what you mean about parts too. He bought it wrecked, and at the time you could only buy the parts from the dealer or used - but that may have changed. He was a good 10 grand into making it road worthy again. Luckily one of his friends is a BMW tech.

EDIT: Found a couple pics of it.
