I cleaned my battery posts a while back in Dec 08 but today noticed there is now blue build up around the post ? I added some oil on Friday and didn't notice the buildup but today I noticed it (Don't think I payed attention as it could've been there before) Any idea what causes this ? Only think I can think of is that I drove about 90 miles to visit the family this weekend which is the longest trip since replacing a cracked head?? Doubt that would be any cause though.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like normal corrosion on the terminals, You could always clean them and put some grease on them to stop the blue crust from appearing. At least thats what i do anyways.

I figure it is normal but man the buildup seemed soo rapid as opposed to before.. Prior to that I cleaned them maybe 2-3 years ago and there wasn't as much buildup as after only 3 months.. Weird but Ill have to clean it again sometime soon.

Thanks !

hey what are your clamps made out of? if their copper then its copper sulfate from the reaction with the sulferic acid and some acid might be spilling out of your battery

auto-blow lol sells a battery post grease that keeps that from happening. also, try putting those washer type deals under the terminals. helps out alot too

they make a cleaner that make stops the acid froming on the termnals it shows up pink and when there is no acid it turns yellow

don't know about the copper content of todays pennies, but in the old days we used to rest them on the battery near to the posts and they would absorb the discharge. cheap disposable fix.

use early 70's and before pennys, anything after that is a mixture of zinc, clad, + other junk

get a maintenance free battery.
if its 4 to 5 years old and venting that bad, start looking for another one.
