truck = bone stock 05 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0l 5 speed, with e-shift t-case 110k miles
situation = doing 75mph on an incredibly smooth road, in 2 wheel, with 8 40lb bales of hay in the bed, and i had just replaced the u-joints in the rear shaft. No vibration leading up to the failure, just smooth sailing and then BOOM!!!!

Looks to be a housing failure, not internal. Check your motor and trans mounts...

its definitely the housing that failed, just in front of the main body of the case, hell of a noise it made when it happend.

That, my friend, is a busted transmission extension housing, not the T-case.

It also looks as if the rubber from the input shaft seal on the T-case is melted and sprayed on the inside of the housing... If thats the case, then I would suspect no fluid or a bad pump in the T-case. But I'm just guessing.

You can see in the third pic it got the Tcase plate, but most of it is the extension housing...

It looks like it only split to the seam between the extension and the T-case, not into the case.

Hey B411s, you got it apart yet?

Looks that way, guess I was looking at it wrong...lol

I had to stare at it for a few minutes. I havent busted one that good... yet.

Haven't gotten it apart yet, and probably won't until the middle of next month, I'm gonna get a better look at it this coming weekend and will post updated pictures, it was definitely split on the t-case side of the flange where the tranny and t-case mate though. Not 100% certain on how much damage there is yet, but I'm already flabbergasted at the fact of the housing splitting like that under not unusual circumstances. The leading theory at the moment is that between the t-case being almost dry (it wasn't a month ago) and having horribly shot u-joints the aluminum developed small stress fractures, and when I got the u-joints changed it just gave and blew.

I read a little more into it, and looked at some photos of a fully assembled tranny AND t case, the extension housing split and part of the front half of the tcase also broke.

Either way... It looks like you'll need a T-case and an extension housing.

At least.

Where would I go to get an extension housing, besides ford?

Sent from an aircraft inside a hangar.

Trans output shaft is most likely tweaked aswell. If it is, it will just cause the next housing to do the same thing if you don't replace it.
