blower speeds

replaced what i thought was a bad resistor, new one still is same as the old one, speeds 1, 2, and 3 are all almost identical as low as 1, speed 4 is full blast works great. Looked clean inside the blower. lots of air comes out of ducts on 4. So I tried taking the resistor out and turning blower on, speed one the coil on resistor gets red hot, 2 hot but not red hot. 3 still pretty hot, 4 cools down. any suggestions?

Maybe you replaced something else? That issues is usually cause by the resister.

It sounds to me like the resistor just doesn't have the range of settings you're looking for....

I'm pretty sure you just described a functional system.

A failing blower can also cause this issue. With the dropped voltage of the lower speeds it can't keep up, but full power produces full speed.

ok, maybe it is working? just doesn't have a good range? i sat in vehicle yesterday with engine off. If you change blower speed with it quiet, you can hear very slight differences between the different speeds. Not much, with engine running you can't even hear the slight differences. Maybe it is working correctly just doesn't have the differences in resistance it should?
