we used to call parts stores when i was a kid and ask for a thermostat for a 60's beetle, or a spark plug for a 90's f-350 with the 7.3 motor. after laughing on hold for 15 minutes they would usually come back and say they couldn't find it in their computer and if i could bring the part in they could find the part number to get me one.
