big block ID

OK, I have been trying to sell this big block Ford engine for some time. I am positive it's a 429, but the guy who just came to look at it says it's a 460 and declined to purchase. Here are the numbers.

Heads C8VE-E
Block C9VE-B
Rods C8VE-A

I have researched and discovered that there will be a 4U or a 4UA on the crank if it is a 429. It does have the 4U stamping. However, I only discovered all this after he left. Is there any other way to be 100% certain it is a 429? I also read the blocks are identical right down to the bore, but the pistons are different from a 429 to a 460. If this is the case, what would I look for on a piston? I have not pulled one out yet.
 
Not familiar at all with them so I took a quick trip to Google. They both use the same rods and seems like the same block castings. Kind of like with the old FE engines, same casting numbers on the block could be 3-4 different displacements. Measuring the stroke would be the best way if you can.

pretty sure you have a 429. dont remember too many c8xx 460 numbers...
 
I'm with Mac. Ford likes to use the same block castings for multiple displacements and just add a few inches to the deck height to give it more stroke. I'd say the best way to find this displacement is to calculate, which isn't hard if you have a head off. Put one piston at the bottom of the stroke, measure, then measure the width of the cylinder, the final formula you will want is (3.14*radius^2*height of cylinder)*8= engine displacement.
 
Yes, that's a 429 crank. A 460 will have a 2Y etc. The casting numbers you posted would be the same for either. Only thing is, a 460 would have only been in a Lincoln back then.

You've got the best 429/460 parts there are right there. Adjustable-type rockers, closed chamber heads, nice thick block.
 
The motor was in a truck that was headed for the scrapyard so I rescued it with the intention of finding a mid 60's F-100 or a late 60's Mustang to drop it in. I have no way of knowing if it was the original engine or not. Unfortunately those dreams have evaporated. From what I gather the heads are 68 models and the block is a 69. Maybe the guy will reconsider and buy it. He's got a '53 F-200 to put it in. Will be a hawg if he does it.
