im going to look at some BFG ATs tonight that a friend of mine has in his barn. he told me $100 for the set of 4, 3 are like new, the 4th would make a good spare. is there anything in particular i should look at with these tires other than the usual plugs, cuts, bulges and cracks?

It's pretty well a tire.

The main thing is small rocks get between the tread and cause holes to wear, but you cant really see that.

Are they on rims? if so I'd air them to spec, then add 5psi, then look for cracks (it's often hard to tell when they are deflated.

Look around well where they seal with the rim.

(honestly I am leary of used tires, I have never had a set that I didn't run till they showed air or broke a bead, or 3)
I love the sound of the steel belts humming on the asphault.

I've never bought a set of tires new...lol. As good as BFG AT's are, they're notorious for belt seperation, so thats definately something to look for. Other then that, check for splits indicating weathering, lumps in the sidewall etc. Plugs and patches aren't usually a no-go for me as long as they're done right and there's enoguh tread left/cheap enough to justify the purchase.

The old BFG AT's liked to crack where the sidewall meets the tread. Usually they crack diagonally. You can also find weather checking by airing down all the way and folding the sidewall. Look between the thread lugs for cracks too.

There are also two styles of these. There are the old ones and the new KO's (say KO on the sidewall.) Non-KO's have not been made for several years.

well i checked them out last night and they ended up being mud terrains. the guy who had them used to be big into drag cars and mini trucks, but got hepatitis a few years back and hasnt been him self since, so these tires sat in his air conditioned drag trailer for a few years. i didnt see any signs of punctures or cracks, but one tire does have a decent amount of wear on it, so it will be my spare. ill post up some pictures soon once theyre mounted.

Score! Nice find, them dont look too bad at all.

Yeah, I would definitely buy those for $100.

You should buy them, then we'll split the cost, I get them for the first 20k then their yours.

heres a pic of them on the truck

the front two are pretty meaty and they balanced perfectly. the rear two are the heavily worn ones and they were each 20 oz. out of balance, but i didnt want that much weight on the rims so i just ran them the way the were. they are a bit rough @ 45, but theyll do for now, till i can afford a new set (im still in the building stages so i dont drive it much).
